About the Author
Paul Bergman is a Professor of Law at the UCLA School of Law and a recipient of a University Distinguished Teaching Award. His recent books include Reel Justice: The Courtroom Goes to the Movies (Andrews & McMeel); Trial Advocacy: Inferences, Arguments, Techniques (with Moore and Binder, West Publishing Co.); and Represent Yourself In Court and The Criminal Law Handbook (both with Berman-Barrett, Nolo). He has also published numerous articles in law journals, and regularly gives presentations on how law and lawyers are portrayed in film.

Sara J. Berman is a professor at Concord Law School and co-founder of PASS Bar Review. She is the co-author of Represent Yourself in Court and The Criminal Law Handbook and the author of numerous articles and law course materials.

Good but too basic.... you cannot use this alone to go to trial

Very informative.... but not quite detailed enough.

You cannot use this book alone to go to trial... or even to file a Complaint or a Motion. It gives general explanations but seriously misses a beat in the details. It would be more accurate if Nolo sold this as a supportive "basic knowledge" book and NOT a "how to try your case", book.

And as a suggestion I would say that they should have more detailed books that are customized per states? That actually get into the nitty gritty, for instance, how to actually fill out a Complaint Cover Sheet? ect. This book just tells you you need to start your Lawsuit by filing a Complaint. Thats hardly an explanation of how to actually fill out the forms, what each form means, ect.

NOLO is a wonderful resource... but they could be SO much bigger and better.

Thorough, confidence building.

I recommend this book to anyone with any kind of suit to file in court...and especially if you hire a lawyer. This way, you can stay up to speed on the process of what is going on, and what your lawyer should be doing. The book goes into enough detail to explain the important things, but not so much detail that you fall asleep trying to muddle through. I recommend starting anywhere inside and reading anything you have any questions about.

It is a real eye opener, unfortunately, if you have a lazy lawyer who is just phoning your case in. With this book in your arsenal, you will know what is expected of your barrister! Enjoy. This book is recommended if you are even THINKING of suing someone or going to court for any reason. In my case, I found out that my lawyer was 1)Overcharging me a great deal and 2) Not doing his homework and 3) Not fighting for me in court nearly as hard as was possible. As a result, I fired that firm and hired another one for the appeal.

This is a great book. If you are going to court or going through a child custody case this is a great book especially if you represent yourself.
Sometimes it may be preferrable to pay an attorney to advise you rather than represent you in court. This saves court costs. Therefore this book is a great aid in helping to prepare yourself. Even if you have never gone to court this book is full of knowldege to help you in case you do.
Very useful and practical information.

Stewart writes and edits books on landlord-tenant law, real estate, and other consumer issues. She is the co-author of First-Time Landlord, Nolo's Essential Guide to Buying Your First Home, Every Landlord's Legal Guide, Every Tenant's Legal Guide, Leases and Rental Agreements, and Renters' Rights.

Bray is an author and legal editor at Nolo, specializing in real estate, immigration law, and nonprofit fundraising. She is co-author of Nolo's Essential Guide to Buying Your First Home and also edits a number of Nolo's small business books. Bray's working background includes solo practice, nonprofit, and corporate stints, as well as long periods of volunteering, including an internship at Amnesty International's main legal office in London. I've reviewed three Nolo books now and all three have done a wonderful job of translating complicated legal mumbo-jumbo into readable material regular folks can understand. They may not replace the advice of a lawyer in my opinion, but perhaps I'm just a wimp. I was a little apprehensive of a book publisher of this caliber teaming up with USA Today as I consider their newspaper the sort of thing people read when they don't want to learn anything. Still, in a strange way, the combination works rather well. Nolo provides the information and the pages are sprinkled with interesting factoids or Snapshot Pictures to keep the material from getting too dry and putting you to sleep. It makes the entire book reader-friendly while still providing a valuable source of info.

Each chapter has subchapters with specific topics that are easily referenced via the table of contents if you are searching for something specific.

Like other Nolo books, First-Time Landlord provides a step-by-step guide to the process of purchasing an investment property from start to finish. UNLIKE other Nolo books, First-Time Landlord does not provide a reference guide containing the various laws in the 50 different states that will impact you. Instead, you will frequently get phrases like, "check state law", that tend to get annoying. Even worse, they often don't provide suggestions as to which state department or authority we should talk to. Those blue pages in the phone book get larger every year and it's difficult to play the runaround game with state workers when we don't know where to begin. It's a significant omission and I hope it's updated in future editions, but it's my only gripe. Otherwise, any potential landlord will want to read this book first and I'm still giving them five stars for the info and layout. Nice job, Nolo.

good for starter information, but you may need more

This easy-to-read book goes over the basics of renting out a single family home. Most of it is easy to understand and reading the book will provide one with a good base of information.

I was disappointed that this book didn't mention anything specifically related to renting out a part of owner-occupied property and how that situation might be similar to or different from renting out an entire house. Also, the discussion on depreciation of investments and what impact that will have at the time of sale was not well explained.

This is a good book to read for some initial information, but you'll probably need to consult other sources as well.

I am making money following it's advice!

I bought this book when starting a rental business. This book is eye-opening, really. I surprised my real estate agent. It gives many hands on details as well as resource for further learning. It is a small book so don't expect it to help you make million dollar decision, however, for a small rental business in initial stage, this is pretty much all you need. This book also helped me avoid a few costly mistakes. It is also very easy to read.
What can be a better compliment than simply saying: I read it and I am making money following it's advice!

The book I've been waiting for

To me as a scientist, artist and a spiritual seeker this book offers may ways to see God's face through a remarkable blend of science, poetry and mysticism. Here, scientifically sound facts and heart-felt poetry compliment a rare selection of pioneering mystical practices, allowing me to explore vast realms of subtle existence, and evoking many vantage points onto a truly Magical Nature of our Universe. In fact, I've been waiting for a book such as this for a long time. It confirmed many of my own insights and discoveries, enriching and deepening my understanding of such diverse topics as unity of religious ideas, quantum physics and chaos theory, Sufi metaphysics, fractal geometry, cosmology of Ibn `Arabi, prophetology, and many, many others... In addition to all that, for me this book was a beginning of an entirely new attunement to the work of some of the last century most prominent spiritual teachers: Hazrat Inayat Khan and Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan.

I believe that Donald Weiner's book opens a new chapter in contemporary spirituality, where perennial wisdom meets innovative mystical and scientific tools, which allow all of us to manifest and embody Creative Imagination of the Future Humanity, whose Knowledge is lived as a co-creative dialogue within the ONE.

A "must have" for parents of Special Education Children.

This book will become the "bible" for parents of Special Education children. The book is wirtten with the lay person in mind in a clear and concise manner. The whole IEP process is spelled out in easy to follow steps that gently glides one through the process. The letters and forms which can be copied or added to are invaluable, and take a giant step toward helping parents become effective advocates for their children. A copy of the law IDEA 1997 is included, giving full disclosure to the general public. The information included in this book can save a parent thousands of dollars in attorney's fees. If you buy just one book about Special Education this year, this should be the one!

The Dummy proof IEP

I found this book to be the MOST informative book on the market for writing an IEP. It gives examples, details and actual pull out pages of the forms necessary for writing a complete and accurate IEP. I reviewed MANY books and none were as informative as this book. I am going to my sons IEP with a complete and thorough knowledge and understanding of the process. I highly recommend this book to any parent who has or is having a child in Special Education or mainstreaming into regular classes.

I am just beginning to navigate the special education maze and have found this book to be a valuable resource in plotting my course. It not only informs you of your rights, in non-techical terms, but it also provides insights, organization and planning tips as well as, a multitude of writing templates. It has allowed me to feel as though I am much more in control of the situation, versus feeling as though the process is "being done to me". I hope it helps you.

About the Author
Anthony Mancuso is a corporations and limited liability company expert. He graduated from Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, is a member of the California State Bar, writes books and software in the fields of corporate and LLC law, and studies advanced business taxation at Golden Gate University in San Francisco. He has also been a consultant for Silicon Valley EDA (Electronic Design Automation) companies. He is the author of several Nolo books on forming and operating corporations (both profit and nonprofit) and limited liability companies. Good book but the electronic materials are lacking

Book is very complete and informative but there is no CD and the forms that you download are labeled in an irritatingly obfuscated fashion. In order for the files to be useful you will need to refer to the book and rename about a hundred documents manually.

Focuses on Corporations - very little on other corporate structures

I am a self-taught corporate paralegal. While I am comfortable with forming, dissolving, and amending entities in every state in the U.S. (& Puerto Rico as well), I don't have as much experience handling resolutions, appointment of officers, etc. and the accompanying paperwork.
I had hoped that this book would be helpful to me, but quickly found it was not. The focus here is clearly on corporations and not limited liability companies (which is 99% of what I work with), limited partnerships or limited liability partnerships. However, from what I do know about corporations, this book appears to offer a great number of forms and detailed examples and explanations.

My search for a Corporate Handbook for LLC's continues.

This is a wonderful story set amid the dramatic mid 1800's backdrop of our nation's Civil War. I appreciate how Mr. Wayne has weaved a realistic drama into the pages of this historic time period, while incorporating both the tragedy of the many battles and the trials, tribulations and indomitable spirit of those who were both on the front lines and on the home front. While set predominantly in the South, it offers a comprehensive look at both the North and the South, and the issues that were of concern to the people who lived during that time - all the while remaining true to historical facts. It is primarily a love story, with bits of humor and strong spiritual faith blended in, while being an uplifting educational read - and at the same time offering a profound perspective on life itself.

About the Author

Until his death in late 2011, Stephen R. Elias was a practicing attorney, active Nolo author, and president of the National Bankruptcy Law Project. He was the author or coauthor of many Nolo books, including How to File for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. Steve held a law degree from Hastings College of Law and practiced law in California, New York, and Vermont before joining Nolo in 1980. He was featured in such major media as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Good Morning America, 20/20, Money Magazine, and more. A Solid Background and Reference for Those With Financial Problems

I am an attorney in the San Francisco Bay Area focusing on bankruptcy, representing consumers and small business owners in Chapter 7 and 13 proceedings, and some individuals in Chapter 11 proceedings. I purchase each new edition of the Nolo Chapter 13 and Chapter 7 books when they are available. I keep a copy available so I can show and recommend them to clients who are eager to have a "desk reference" to the bankruptcy process. For reasons explained below, I do not consider it a "user manual" to their own case though. I instead try to provide them with extensive in-person explanation, and handouts that are specific to the jurisdiction we are filing the case in.

While it is primarily a creature of federal statute, bankruptcy law is in practice very local. The results the debtor can achieve through filing might vary widely between states, cities, and even judges sitting in the same city. The results of these variations can directly affect the bottom line most filers are concerned about: how much, if any, of their debt will they need to repay to get a bankruptcy discharge and prevent or delay wage garnishments, levies, foreclosures, lawsuits and repossessions.

This book cannot cover those nuances - which can affect whether the case should be filed and the result that can be achieved if it is filed - for every locality. This is understandable, as these can catch even experienced practitioners off guard - (for example: a debt that might need to be paid back through the plan in Sacramento, incurring expensive trustee fees, might be able to be paid outside the plan in San Francisco, Oakland, or San Jose without trustee fees.) In explaining the overall purpose of the law and its intent though, the book achieves what it set out to do, and acknowledges its limitations.

In terms of quality and organization, the Nolo books are first-rate consumer guides for bankruptcy. These books educate the consumer very well. On the other hand, some readers who purchase the book might be disappointed because they think (due to the Nolo brand) they are getting a "do it yourself" legal guide, only to discover that the book will advise them that they are probably better off hiring a qualified lawyer because of the complexity of the process. For that reason only, I give the book four stars instead of five.

For the consumer who wants to understand Chapter 13 bankruptcy, I think this is by far the best publication available. It is frequently updated for a physical book, and avoids many of the vague over-generalizations and pure fiction that I see repeated online, in news publications, and repeated in my office by prospective clients. I think the book is a useful reference for attorneys in other areas like taxation, or real estate professionals or accountants who have clients who might need to file bankruptcy and want to understand what Chapter 13 bankruptcy is.

In the area where I practice, federal guidelines fail to adequately account for the real cost of living here, so two-income couples with relatively average salaries may find themselves disqualified from filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy and need to file Chapter 13 even if they don't have unexempt property. These individuals are often convinced that filing Chapter 13 means they "have to pay everything back" which is usually not true. I regularly help people with fairly high incomes to pay back a modest fraction of what they owe in Chapter 13. In the exceptional case where 100% of unsecured debts are repaid, there is generally little or no interest on that debt, which can yield huge savings versus non-bankruptcy "options" or procrastination.

Potential filers have often been misled about bankruptcy by people who had a financial interest in preventing them from filing bankruptcy. I recommend this book to skeptical people who would be better served by filing. In summary, this is a great reference book for the consumer or generalist, but I think readers will agree it is not a do-it-yourself book. In light of what is at stake though, for those who want to know more and have the time to learn, purchasing and reading the book will be a good investment of time.
