Julia Nissley was Probate Administrator with the Los Angeles law firm of Silverberg, Rosen, Leon and Behr for many years. She is an honors graduate of the Attorney Assistant Training Program in Probate Administration at the University of California--Los Angeles School of Law, and a member of the California Association of Legal Document Assistants. Julia is a native Californian and enjoys playing tennis and riding trains with her husband, Ron. The author of How to Probate an Estate in California, Julia now operates her own form preparation service under the name Probate Direct, assisting consumers with all kinds of probate paperwork through the mail or in person.

Good book, but requires significant effort and time to learn the probate process

An excellent book to probate a small estate. But don't be misguided. Probate is a difficult and a time consuming process. We are in the final steps and have been lucky to have a court in a small (population) county where the court clerk could give us some time. The first hearing we had was using "Court Call" because we are an 8 hour drive from home to the court house. And fortunately our son is a lawyer (not probate) and would read the forms before we submitted to check for any errors. We used the book because the estate was not large and the will was quite simple and we thought we could do it ourselves. The book guides you well, but prepare to also use search on the internet to help you understand some of the steps and lastly, make sure whoever is doing the documents is somewhat OCD (Obsessive Compulsive) as the procedure requires strict organization.

Disappointed with Availability of Forms.

Only includes forms for Los Angeles County. and Judicial Council forms. Changed organization from earlier version and I found it more confusing. I expected all non-Judicial forms to be available on a CD or available from nolo.com. This is not the case as the form that I needed was not available for download. I had to create the form which took a lot of extra time. I bought the newer version to save time but this did not happen.
I am disappointed in this edition.

It turns out I didn't need to go through probate and I missed Amazon's 30-day return window - so if you are looking for this at a discount, let me know. I've got it listed on Ebay for resale (Amazon want's too much to sell it for me). I'm in the Sacramento Area, so if you are local I can meet you for drop off if you like.
I bought this book because I couldn't not find a single source of all the information I would need to process the probate. My mom had a very, very simple estate and the estate attorney wanted $8k that neither I nor the estate had, so I decided to see if I could just file the papers myself. I shopped around and bought this based on reviews. The book looks like you hope it will, with lots of good information and forms included - with access to the NOLO website for downloadable forms. I'm have no doubt my probate would have gone smoothly.
