About the Author
Ralph "Jake" Warner,widely recognized as a pioneer of the do-it-yourself law movement, Warner founded Nolo with Ed Sherman in 1972. He began publishing do-it-yourself law books written by him and his colleagues after numerous publishers rejected them. Warner holds a law degree from Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley and an undergraduate degree from Princeton.

As Nolo's managing editor, Portman oversees editorial work on all Nolo books. She specializes in residential and commercial landlord/tenant law, legal issues related to courts, landlords and tenants, and neighbor disputes. She is the author or co-author of Every Landlord's Legal Guide, Every Landlord's Guide to Finding Great Tenants, Every Tenant's Legal Guide, Renters' Rights, Negotiate the Best Lease for Your Business, Leases & Rental Agreements, The California Landlord's Law Book and California Tenants' Rights. Portman received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Stanford University and a law degree from Santa Clara University. Before joining Nolo in 1994, she practiced law as a public defender.

David Brown practices law in the Monterey, California area, where he has represented both landlords and tenants in hundreds of court cases -- most of which he felt could have been avoided if both sides were more fully informed about landlord/tenant law. Essential for California Landlords!

As a board member of an organization serving owners of small rental properties in San Francisco, I have used and recommended earlier editions of this book literally dozens of times. There are laws and rules, statewide and local, that dictate almost every action an owner takes regarding his rental property. Don't guess; your tenant knows his rights (and, maybe, his responsibilities), and an owner who, even unknowingly, breaks the rules must pay. I have met owners who have lost their property to a rapacious tenant/lawyer combination, all over an unwitting mistake in procedure.

The California Landlord's Law Book: Rights & Responsibilities covers every situation that might arise, or directs owners to the appropriate resources. It also contains a wealth of suggestions for common-sense property management. The index is comprehensive and easy to use. Besides tear-out forms to use in various situations, there's an included CD-ROM that includes the forms to print out when needed. Do not miss the list of additional services provided by NOLO Press, including a free Legal Encyclopedia and Legal Dictionary online at nolo.com.

This book and its companion volume covering evictions are the essential manuals for engaging in rental property management. Buy it. If you have an older edition, it's time to update.

Great for the newbie Landlord

This is a well written, detailed book. The quality of Nolo's books is always good and this one does not disappoint. It might err on the side of having too much basic information but that is tremendously helpful for the new landlord. And since California State laws do change frequently, it isn't bad idea for an experienced landlord to review.

Nolo provides RTF and in some cases PDF files of all the forms on an included CD an entry level landlord would need and thats worth half the price of the book.

I also appreciated Appendix A - Rent Control chart, and the thoughtful discussion of what rent control means to you as a landlord.

Excellent Source for the novice California Landlord

I'd highly recommend this book for novice California landlords. It details many rules, legal issues, and rights of both the landlord and the tenants. It even goes further to assist w/ understanding and writing up of the contracts. When we were debating about evicting our tenant, this book came as an excellent resource in detailing the process and understanding both the tenant's and landlord's rights.

Excellent read!

I am 19 years old and a freshman in college, and have had a rocky road with my religion through my life. My relationship with God grew stronger in the last year and a half of high school, and then college started. To be honest, college is like entering a whole new universe. There were so many new opportunities, good and bad, to involve myself in. My first semester of college, I began to do what made me happy, instead of what I knew was right, instead of what I knew what God would want me doing. After reading "Between Us Girls", I feel like my life is back on track and I know that I need to live a God-driven life. It was so nice to not only be able to relate to Megan Byrd, the author, but to the other girls who were in the stories in the book. It's nice to know that you're not alone in this journey of life. I would certainly recommend this book to any young ladies, in high school, college, or just out of college. It is a great read and very well written.

Great book for young women!

Between Us Girls by Megan Byrd is a book every young woman should have in her library. Megan boldly speaks of her experiences in college and of the things she, as a young Christian, wishes she had been prepared for before heading to the big campus.

Megan's goal in writing this book is to point young women toward Jesus and to help them see that their identities are not found in the men they date. She talks openly about sexual integrity and abstinence. If you have a young adult woman in your life who is getting ready for college, I recommend getting this book for her.

Light-Heart Revival of an Ageless Classic

Needless to say, Neon Genesis Evangelion is a classic in both the anime and manga fields, and perhaps one of the smartest stories to ever come out of Japan. It uses symbolism as well as if not better than some of the greatest writers of literature, has very strong characterization (Shinji, though annoying, is still well-known through-out the anime world as one of the whinniest characters ever), and has as dramatic and disturbing plot. So, when it ended with the ending it did end with (say that 5x fast), it left a lot of people wanting more.

Angelic Days just so happens to be the "more" that people are wanting. Taking place in an alternate time-stream from the original Evangelion, Angelic Days is more of a light-hearted high school drama than a melodramatic action story. Shinji isn't the brooding teenager he was in the first series and though Asuka is her bossy self, she and Shinji are as close to best-friends as they get. Beyond those two, Rei is an outgoing, boy-hungry young girl and Kaworu (the boy-like angel from the first series) is an effeminate loner whose only friend is Shinji. And all of them are students in the same class, bringing them tightly together rather quickly in this story. Still, despite the concentration on everyday life in this volume, the promise is still quite apparent. There will be mech battles very soon, if not in the next volume.

Rarely does the setting in this volume leave the school. In fact, most of the story in volume one deals with things that kids have to go through in school, including getting picked on by friends, girl problems, and issues with the parents. Except for one or two occasions, little in this manga would actually even suggest what is to come and only long-time fans of the series would see where this manga is headed. In essence, this is more of a light-hearted revival of the old Evangelion.

This isn't a perfect manga, though. If you're new to the world of Evangelion, getting into Angelic Days may be difficult. There is very little in the way of character introduction. You just have to know what they were like before to understand what they are like here, and to appreciate what they've become. Also, the art isn't as clean-cut as I would have guessed it to be. There were a few panels that actually took a moment to discern what was in the picture. And finally, there were some grammatical problems. Though not enough for me to lower my rating, it is definitely enough for people who aren't interested in Evangelion to completely bash this manga into the dirt.

As for recommendations, I highly recommend Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic Days to people who know, understand, and love the story in the old Evangelion. You'll have a greater appreciation for the changes made in Angelic Days if you're a knowledgeable Eva fan; if you're somewhat new to Evangelion you'll find some of the changes in this a little jarring.

Evangelion Fanbois Only

Angelic Days is a spinoff of Neon Genesis Evangelion, using the same characters but placing them in a school-romance setting instead of a post-apocalypic giant robots setting. Several changes include: 2nd Impact never happened, Rei is cheerful instead of emotionless, Misato is their teacher, Shinji's mom's not dead, etc.

This all sounds good in theory but it's not executed very well. Fumino Hayashi's art isn't NEARLY as precise or clean as Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's (original Eva character designer and author of the Evangelion manga) and the story feels rather cliche. Standard romance stuff that you'll see in tons of manga, all with better art and storytelling. The only thing that sets this apart is the use of characters from Eva. This honestly feels more like a watered down doujinshi (japanese amateur fan comic) than an official Gainax work.

For people who just want MOAR EVA, this IS more, it's just not very good. Grab it if you need your fix, but don't be surprised when you're left feeling a little dirty.

For those who haven't seen the original series, I'd say stay away from this.

A Kinder, Gentler Evangelion

Have you ever viewed Gainax's classic anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and wondered "What would it be like if Shinji wasn't such a wimp?" or "What would Rei be like if she were more normal?" If these questions have every crossed your mind or you are an eager fan looking for a zany and somewhat unorthodox take on the landmark series, then unquestionably Fumino Hayashi's Angelic Days will be for you.

As a manga, Angelic Days presents an alternate retelling of the Evangelion story, making use of the same characters, settings, and scenarios that fans of the series would be familiar with, but placing them in a much lighter context. There won't be any long pauses of soul searching and introspection to be found here. Life in Tokyo 3 is about as normal as if can be for young Shinji Ikari. His home life is quiet and uneventful, in part due to the fact that his parents, Gendo and Yui, work for a lab located in the city and are therefore largely unavailable. He has plenty of friends to keep him in and out of trouble, though, including geeky Kensuke, jock-with-a-soft-side Toji, the cool, quiet Kaworu (who fans of the series will recall is the 17th Angel...), and of course, Asuka, Shinji's friend since childhood who takes it upon herself to keep him in line and on time. The routine of eating, sleeping, learning, and having fun goes unbroken until strange dreams of a `giant of light' begin to impact young Shinji in the sleeping hours. While these visions are troubling enough, things get even more complicated when he and Asuka run into (quite literally) a mysterious new transfer student to the class. The arrival of this student, a vibrant, bubbly, and somewhat socially challenged Rei Ayanami, instantly causes ripples in the fabric of routine life that threatens to turn Shinji's world upside down and inside out, and back again. It does not take long before Shinji catches Rei's curious fancy, a reality that draws nothing but surprisingly jealous ire from Asuka, igniting a tense and comical rivalry between to the two girls over our reluctant and somewhat oblivious hero. But Rei's arrival is doing more than just make waves among the children who know her. Her presence marks the beginning of a new `phase' in an experiment perpetrated by the city's scientific community, and Shinji's visions of the giant might be more premonition than adolescent fantasy.

The first volume sets the tone nicely for what is to follow, though admittedly there is very little back-story for readers unfamiliar with the source material. Characters are introduced swiftly and under the assumption that readers know them by heart, which might leave some scratching their heads. But familiarity with the anime will also bring about a few shocks of its own when fans plunge into the volume. While some characters retain much of what made their personalities memorable (like Asuka, minus her apparent hatred for Shinji), others are completely revised. Shinji is no longer the quiet, sullen loner focused only on himself but rather he is happy and smiling, apparently enjoying life as it comes. Perhaps the most surprising change comes with Rei. The silent, crimson-eyed enigma of the series is portrayed now with boisterous energy, so much that any relation to the original character exists in name and look only. The change is not a bad one by any means, and in fact fits will with the overall tone of the story. Angelic Days plays out more like a high school drama/comedy than a sci-fi tale. In fact, aside from a few obvious details like the plug suits and references to NERV, one might be convinced that this has nothing to do with Evangelion at all, save for a few names and faces. Future volumes do, however, appear to promise more direct connections to the source material, including appearances by the Angels and the Evangelion units.

Hayashi's art style is more kinetic and, at times, more chaotic than the iconic artwork of original character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, but in a good way. Hayashi retains the basic feel of the characters while injecting them with personal interpretation and whimsy. This fits the nature of the story well, seeing as Angelic Days serves as a breezy, light-hearted alternative to the grim tale that is its cousin. There is a certain charm in the simplicity here, whether it is the rendering or writing, or just the overall feel that Hayashi invokes in each frame. While Shinji and friends might have induced moments of outrage and anger among viewers of the anime, they come across as much more likable and sympathetic here, helped in part by the softer lines and tones of the artwork.

While the story might lack some details and, at the moment, momentum, there is enough to be found in this first volume of Angelic Days to at the very least pique curiosity. It will be interesting to see where Fumino Hayashi takes it from here and how much of the original story finds its way into the proceedings. Hardcore fans of the original series may find the changes off-setting, and would be better off sticking with the other version of Evangelion in manga form, that being the reinterpretation from Yoshiyuki Sadamoto himself. However, that being said, Angelic Days is also the perfect compliment to Sadamoto's work. Readers eagerly waiting for Sadamoto to release his next volume of the Evangelion manga might want to consider giving this fun romp a look.

A man's life

This book is not just about a man's involvement in the Catholic Cursillo movement and the Protestant Walk To Emmaus. It's more about his life and those circumstances and events that led him to an awareness of God's grace and mercy, and the growing pains he experienced as he matured in his Christian life. I can identify with Bob Lillie and that's why this book is so meaningful. I am also a sinner, saved by God's grace through Jesus Christ and the Cross. Bob is a great coach and follows a great leader, God the Father.

At some point in life, we must humble ourselves and apologize, repent, and even forgive, in order to truly grow.

The book, ‘I Won’t Apologize for Being a Woman’, by Zorina Exie Jerome, has taken me, the reader, all the way back to my high school days. After reading the entire book, this work of literature portrays a shattered woman who struggles to place the pieces of her internal self back together, all the while, mentally and spiritually battling more than one inner-demon, who has a heightened and intense desire to possess the admirable characteristics of the biblical definition of what the popular book in The Bible, Proverbs, describes and defines as, a virtuous woman. The character in the book professes to be Godly, while simultaneously, referencing to other women as, “chicken-heads”, and “haters”, whereas, she appears to demonstrate a strong sense of hatred within her own self.

For instance, in the poem entitled, ‘Chicken heads’, the author highlights how she has feelings in regards to another woman’s fruits, with covetousness, and in detail, with statements such as: “I hate my envy of your fruits…”. While reading, it was also apparent to me that the reader is being overtaken by lust and aggressive lustful emotions. While the character contemplates thoughts of God and virtuosity, she sorely yearns to be physically and sexually pleased by her own ideal perception of a man that just may not exist, and the aspect of true love from her idyllic man, is nearly absent.

I believe the book could have supported the authors, personal spiritual battle concept by focusing more on methods for women to overcome their challenging pasts as well as their own insecurities. It was disturbing to me as the reader that the author, several times throughout the book, indulged in being a physical and sexual temptation to men, in poems such as, ‘Oh Yes. Sexy Dress!’. There were some poems, such as, ‘A Woman of Worth’, that were good, and I would have enjoyed reading more like this. Overall, in regards to the theme, you should never apologize for being a woman, but we should all want to be better people, and unless innocent, man or woman, young and old, at some point in life, we must humble ourselves and apologize, repent, and even forgive, in order to truly grow, develop, and mature spiritually as well as, mentally.

Although I wouldn’t recommend this book to women, I would certainly recommend, ‘I Won’t Apologize for Being a Woman’, to men, as I believe it would allow men the chance to learn about the inner-depths of some women’s thoughts and veiled inhibitions. It’s obvious that the author is searching for God, and I applaud her for her efforts. I pray that not only the author, but all women who experience similar challenges are able to successfully live the true definition of a virtuous woman, and maybe, even one day find the true love they deserve, in Gods time. – D&C

No apologies needed!

Wow! This writer pulls no punches. Aimed primarily to females, these testimonies confront, challenge, exhort and advise. Her voice is strong and confident. "Testimony" is a compelling story of the raw side of life and the redemption that followed.
"It's a Weave, Get Over It" is my favorite. Written with a sassy sense of humor, it has a lot to say about women's ability to love and accept themselves. "I love the way I look, which is why I choose to model any style I wish and look simply ravishing in all of them. And I know it! At the end of the day, I can strip everything off and still like what I see. It’s still me. I know who I am." Wouldn't it be great if all women were that comfortable with who they are!

SO GLAD I FOUND THIS BOOK NOW!

I am in the process of starting up a new branch of my personal training business, and have been worried about how to keep correct records, and filing my taxes properly (and to my best advantage).

For me, this book is a GOLDMINE of information! I am so thrilled to have it--it answered all of my questions and will serve as a valuable tool throughout the year.

It starts with the basics: Using personal stories and examples that are applicable to a home business owner, the author begins with describing how deductions work, how business are taxed, and how you can use this information to best benefit you, to get the greatest value from your deductions.

You have to prove you are a real business and this book teaches you exactly how to do that. I remember back in the 80's you could just create a business so that your hobby could be a tax deduction. Not anymore.

Start up expenses: There are certain expenses you can write off, and some you cannot. There are certain rules you have to follow when you start a business, and there are even accomodations for businesses that never actually get off of the ground. There are also pitfalls (set ups, in my opinion) within the IRS that will bit you in the butt if you don't handle them properly--which this book tells you exactly how to do. Inventory is covered--how to start it up, maintain it, and deduct the costs thereof. It walks you through how to report your inventory to the IRS.

Operating in your home gives you certain tax benefits (we all know that). But, again, unlike the 80's, where you could write off soooo much, now those write offs are limited. This book lays out exactly what those limitations are and how to make the most of your write offs. It walks you through the Home-Office deduction and how to meet the IRS requirements for your deduction(s).

Long-term assets, depreciation, special tax forms--all covered in this book.

We've all heard about meal, entertainment, car, local and business travel expenses being great write offs. It's a lot harder now than in the past, but you CAN do it,and maximize those deductions with the tools in this book.

Now, part of my business includes hiring workers/contractors. This book covers all of it--employees or contractors; tax deductions and employee benefits, and even employing your family members and what that will entail , for you. It even goes over the NEW HEALTH CARE REFORM BILL and how it affects your business. It goes over medical expenses, insurance, tax credits, medical reimbursement plans, and health savings accounts. Wow.

Retirement? It's covered in this book. How to plan for YOUR retirement with a Retirement Plan (or plans). IRA's, employer IRA's, Keoghs, 401K's...it's all there.

It goes through lists of additional home business deductions, from advertising to charitable contributions, to education, to legal services...it's amazing--the more you read, the more you realize you "could have" written off.

It gives 10 tips to avoid an audit, previous year deductions and revisiting past tax years. SO much information is included in this book, I wish I could give you an adequate overview, but it'd be so long, you might as well buy the book. ;)

(10 Tips overview: Be Neat, Thorough, and Exact in your records and filings; Mail Your Return by Certified Mail; Don't File Early; Don't File Electronically; Form a Business Entity; Explain Items the IRS Will Question; Avoid Ambiguous or General Expenses; Report All of Your Income; Watch Your Income-to-Deduction Ratio; Beware of Abnormally Large Deductions...the book spends pages and pages describing each one of these in detail, but I thought this would pique your interest.)

There are spreadsheets and org charts to follow to make sure you are considering the right expenses for the right deductions. The examples are SO clear and concise, you can't mess it up.

If you own your own home business, or are considering starting up a home business, this book is mandatory for you!

This book gives you a number of real-world examples and is a very easy read. Ypou'll be very surprised when you find this book is written ina very invisting and engaing way. You will definately learn so much in just the first few chapters and it will be a reference you return to often!

You will learn how to avoid the tax tragedy of being classified by the IRS as a hobby instead of a legitimate business. In fact, if you claimed any business deductions and were later found to be a hobby which can cost your more, you could find yourselves thousands of dollars in debt to Uncle Sam, thanks to back taxes and penalty fees. But this book gives very easy-to-implement techniques that will help you prove that you are, in fact, a business and hw to report it and most inmportantly keep accurate records for it.

In addition, it gives you the answers to common questions about what constitutes legitimate business deductions, from business lunches (does it count if you talk about business and pleasure?) to the cost of gas used to drive to grocery store with details on how to report it. Also, you can deduct the gas if you used the trip to purchase business supplies (such as paper or envelopes) along with your family's groceries and the details abut reporting them.

You'll also learn the ins and outs of the all-important home office deductions, business issues, along with the tax requirements of hiring workers and there needs, from full-fledged employees to independent contractors. Finally, this book gives ten tips to staying out of trouble with the IRS and avoid audits and pitfalls in taxes..

This book also translates complex tax laws into concepts that those of us who didn't attend law school can easily understand. Also it takes you step by step on where to go and what to do.

An excellent, easy to read reference
By Tell It Like It Is
Here's the bottom line: if you own a business and file a Schedule C with your Form 1040, you are at least 20 times more likely to be audited than if you filed as any type of corporation (LLC, S Corp, or C Corp). It will only cost you a few hundred dollars annually to maintain a corporation and the hassle factor is really no more than properly maintaining a Schedule C entity. If you are going to run a home business of any type, read this book first. It will help you set up things properly so as to minimize your headaches down the road. An excellent starting point.

Jewel's book is a "jewel" for teen girls.

I have been a college classmate of Jewel's and a friend for several years. Jewel writes with concern, clarity, and conviction because she has lived out what she writes about in her book. As a minister and pastor, as well as a former Minister of Youth in Southern Baptist Churches throughout the South, I can recommend without hesitation this book for young to teenage girls. Whether read individually, used in a youth group or small group setting, or in a one on one mentoring situation, this is a great book.

Jewel is a wonderful Christian who speaks and writes from a passionate heart for young women to be all they can be in and through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Buy this book, read it, use it for a small group study; you will not go wrong in doing so.
