About the Author
He was born February 8, 1945, in Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, DC. He attended Dunbar Senior High, graduating in June of 1962. He furthered his education by attending D.C. Teachers. College from 1962 1967. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree. He continued his education earning a. MAT Degree (Master of Arts in Teaching) in May 1975, and a Master's Degree in Administration and Supervision in 1982. He has taught in the DC Public Schools for thirty-four years, retiring in June 2000. His inspiration for writing began in "1971". After retirement he has been concentrating on writing and working with a number of ministries within his church.

A Surprise and a Pleasure

It is my pleasure to write the first review for this book. I must admit possibly having somewhat of a bias, as I am the son of the author, Larry Colwell. That aside, poetry, in my estimation, is about imagination and expression. While in many respects a vehicle of self-expression, poetry, good poetry at that, stirs our imagination and acts as a mouthpiece for us. That's why we often buy greeting cards because they seem to paint a picture and post an expression that says exactly what we want, even better than we could ourselves. As I read this book, I read many (almost all) of the pieces for the first time. With no expectations in mind, I must honestly say that I was surprised and pleased with what I read. Even more, I felt a genuine stirring of emotion within me as I read many of the pieces. This is no small feat, as I tend to approach literary works from a very critical point-of-view. I feel that my father has captured and conveyed the key components of poetry: imagination and expression. Some of these pieces I heard when I was younger. I don't think I appreciated them then nearly as much as I do now. As I've had the chance to experience life a bit more, I've found that some of my experiences have paralleled those of my father. Because of this, I feel as though I understand him and his experiences much better. Thus, his poetry resonates with me because I can see myself in some of those pieces. At times, his poetry speaks to me. At other times, his poetry speaks for me.
Critically speaking, the poetry is not complicated in form. Many of the pieces follow a conventional A-B-A-B or A-B-C-A-B-C scheme. Others are free verse. However, the overall simplicity of form does not dilute the depth and, at times, the complexity of expression. His poetry has the potential to transport you to times in which you've not lived. For example, the piece, "Today, I'm Going To Live," highlights a black man's struggle for freedom and equality. I can understand and experience the significance of this to my dad, a teenage child of the 60s, heavily involved in the Civil Rights movement. Moreover, I find his expression applicable to my current experience as I've struggled with freeing myself from the modern media's portrayal of my generation as hopeless, criminal, homicidal, and foolish. "Killer On The Loose," based on a real tragedy in Atlanta, reflects a modern lament that continues to engulf the Black community. "Road Rage" is self-explanatory. I cracked a smile reading "The Remedy," which brought to mind a twisted memory of the movie, `Mouse Hunt.' "Come Grow Old" is something I hope to say one day to one woman in marriage.
All in all, some pieces I loved more than others. Yet, what I discovered was a depth of expression on a variety of fronts; this is what pleased me most and touched me the greatest. This is not a book of love poetry. This is a book of life poetry. Get this book and experience the imagination and expression of a man I am continuing to discover for myself. Even more, get this book and make the poetry your own by seeing the world through his eyes and in your experiences.
