This is a great book not only for English Language and Composition, but to use for new common core standards. it gives a variety of sources on a thematic topic and then student is asked to generate their own thesis (paper) on it. Really helps spur critical thinking.

About the Author
Carrie Hernández was born in Southern California. She has master's degrees in Administration and Education and worked as a teacher and bilingual coordinator for the Los Angeles Unified School District. In 1990, she received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the National Council for Geographic Education. In 1992 Phantom of the Opera caught her attention. Her research into the story culminated in a number of articles, four works of fiction and a website. She lives with her husband in Los Angeles where they run their own family business. Lotte and her Angel

The recurring theme of the stories in "Angel of Music" is the interaction between Lotte and her Angel. Of the 3 tales, the 2nd, "Phantoms of the Mind", had the most interesting twist, although it is the saddest. The relationship between Erik and the child Lotte is poignant. Her dealings with Christine and her father are filled with the pain she suffers after Erik escapes the gypsies, and her true identity provides some insight into the characters and personalities about which Leroux wrote in his original. The last story, "The Portal", provides a look at what life might have been like if Christine had returned and tried to have a normal life with Erik. In this tale, we see the consequences suffered in that attempt and the child (Lotte) which results. Lotte demonstrates the type of temperament a child might have inherited from Erik. Overall, I enjoyed this book. It delivers 3 different, but interesting insights into the interdependence of the Angel and those he touches.

Better than most but....

Like millions of others, I have been a Phan for many years and have read everything I could get my hands on, especially the Phan phiction online and published phic novels. I couldn't wait to read this book, especially given Ms. Hernandez's "Phantom" background i.e. her website and the much missed magazine and anthologies. While the twist on Little Lotte's true identity was surprising and even a little sad, and the tale of Christine and Raoul charming and sweet, I was completely turned off by "The Portal". I got so tired of Erik's "stench", the vapid and spaced-out Christine/zombie, and the mischevious brat who made Susan Kay's young Erik seem almost saintly. I think the stench references were offensive and mean. Yes, M. Leroux wrote that Erik's hands "smelled of death", but it was not essential to the original story so I couldn't see why it was so important to bring it up again and again in "The Portal". We all understand that Erik was a "living corpse" in appearance but I don't think Leroux meant he truly was a rotting corpse. It just seemed gross and irrelevant. As for Christine, this was not the girl who visited Erik many times unaccompanied, actually lived with him for a fortnight, and eventually was willing to sacrifice herself for Raoul. Even after the author's explanation for her behaviour it just didn't make sense to me. Lastly, the child's role in all this. It seemed like all the nasty things she did were only to make her seem more like "daddy" and not a cry for attention from her poor, hapless mother. I couldn't even sympathize with her. All in all the book is worth a read, especially for "Phantoms of the Mind". If not for "The Portal", I would have given the book 5 stars.

A must-have for any phan

Carrie Hernandez's 'Angel of Music: Tales of the Phantom of the Opera' is comprised of two short stories and a novella. ***Please note: this book contains adult situations and would not be appropriate for minors.***

'Little Lotte' is a charming short story, based on Leroux's novel. It is a take-off of Raoul's recollection of his visits to the Daae's, and is so well-written that it could easily be seamlessly inserted into any English translation of Leroux's novel. Anyway, the story begins with Papa Daae buying Christine the red scarf, much as we find it in Leroux's novel, with some fleshing out. It then goes into the story behind the tale 'Little Lotte' that Papa Daae tells the children. The result is a charming story of finding the beauty in everyday things that even the children of today would love.

'Phantoms of the Mind' is the novella. Carrie Hernandez has intertwined the stories of all of the main players of the POTO in an amazing way. It starts off with a little girl, Charlotte (nicknamed Lotte), going to the local circus. Eager to find acceptance, she offers to clean the cages for the gypsies who run the circus, and stumbles upon a man in a cage. She befriends the man, and the story quickly takes off. Soon we are shown a side of Christine, Papa Daae, the managers, Carlotta, and others, that most of us have never imagined. This novella is pure genius, and I would recommend it to anyone over the age of eighteen. It does contain adult situations, so I would not recommend it for minors. I have relayed most of it to my daughter (12), leaving out the parts that are not appropriate for her age.

'The Portal', a short story, is an alternate ending to Leroux's POTO. Carrie Hernandez is such a talented writer that I loved it in spite of the fact that I did not agree with parts of it. The lengths Erik goes to to be with his love are amazing, yet believable. Christine's future is tragic, but realistic. There is a child, but I will not spoil the story by telling you whose it is. Nor will I delve into Christine's marital status, although we are told in the first sentence. I know there are many readers and phans who would like this one as much, if not more than, I did. And, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I really do not have any negative comments about the book, and I tend to be very opinionated. If there were anything lacking, I'd be all over it. This book would be a welcome addition to any phan's library.

Save Money !!!!!

After reading this book, Eight Ways to Advoid Probate, which I purchased at Amazon.com, and tabbing the really important facts, I have been researching futher to check on how to accomplish the items listed. I have inquired about what has to be done, since the deed to my house is in my name and my daughter's name. I was told all she has to do is take the recorded deed to the property apppraiser's office and request the change. I took the advice on checking account, savings account, and the certificate of deposit and there will be no hassle in settling my estate.
I would like to suggest the book to my friends, but they would rather spend their money on attorney's fees.

A good current source of ways to avoid probate. Book has all states general rules stated. A very good guide to this sometimes difficult subject- author does an excellent job in explanation of this subject. Book should be in any person's library who has to deal with probate issues.

Boy falls for Girl...

Boy finds excuse to go to Girl's place, finds Girl in the hands of a Mad Scientist, Girl turns on Boy - they end up in each OTHERS' BODY. Your basic manga. Nanako Momoi may have been cute on the outside, but she is anything but cute on the inside. And once inside Akira Uehara's body it turns out she prefers being a boy! And what's worse is she seems to be better at being a boy than she was at being a girl.
Akira Uehara is also having mixed feelings. On one hand he is now trapped in her body. On the other hand he is trapped in the body of a petite and adorable girl he had a crush on. And it seems he is ALSO better at being a girl than HE was being a boy.
Things get WEIRD after that, but you'll have to buy the book to figure it out.

Original...hilariously so.

EDIT TWO: Tokyopop has relicensed this series, but thier translation is a little lacking compared to this one. But it's an opportunity to finish it up.

EDIT:For some unfathomable reason, the published decided to discontinue this TWO VOLUME series. You might want to take that into consideration before buying, but the first book really is hysterically funny.

Nope, the body-swap, gender-switch idea isn't original at all... it's been played out over and over again, with varying degrees of success. But never have i read a book so funny! Me and two of my other friends were fighting in the store who got to buy the only volume we found .(I won, obviously.)

Most of the manga's creative humor comes from Momoi, the frighteningly masculine cutie whose agression scared away the guys even when she was in her own petite and girly body. Her attitude is unbelievably insensitive- and the reader gets plenty of sadistic glee/horror watching her abuse poor Urehara, who's so desperately in love with her he can't help but let her push him around like a wheelbarrow. There are many indiginities he must endure at the hands of Momoi- at his own, really, because of the body-switch- when she misuses his body in all sorts of enjoyably shocking ways.

It's refreshing to find a heroine who's... well, a real jerk. Girl characters no longer have to be waifish, tender-hearted, and innocent- there was never a female role as selfish and dirty as Momoi, and just for the fun of it. No dramatic evil plot, no sensual darkness-just a girl who's as cocky as they come, and has the drive and violence to prove it. Watching her is amazingly fun. She's "cool", albeit "inappropriate." The story is really told more from urehara's viewpoint, though, he's usually weepy and unhappy that he's adjusting to life as a girl as well as Momoi is to manhood. He has a real hard time of it trying to preserve what little masculinity he had to begin with, while making it in the world using his "womanly skills." In truth, the degradation of his dignity is the whole point. You feel sorry for him, but you're happily entertained, so...

SOme things I'd like to note is the book's amazing presentation. The dialogue translated extremely well-it made for laughs every time. And I don't laugh very easily, so it'd probably have most people cracking up. If people are familiar with FX- soundeffects- most manga either leave the japanese writing as is and translate it in the back, don't translate it at all, or erase the japanese writing to replace it with english. I really am not entirely enthused about any of these options. With no translation, you're left in the dark. With the effects in the back, you don't get to experinece them in story. The effects are part of the artwork, and carefully planned by the artist to compliment the panels, so getting rid of them means tampering with the image-frankly, usually this looks cheesy.

Your and my secret has found the best solution yet- simply include both in-story. The artwork never looks disturbed, and the reader doesn't feel like something was disrupted, or that something is amiss. Plus, you learn a little easier what each FX means...The author's notes in the back are helpful, and quite specific.

This is probably the best manga to buy for anyone-its comedy will appeal to anyone, not just anime/manga fans. It might even make a fan out of you! It has my highest recommendation, never have I just gone out and bought a manga on the spot like I did with Your and my Secret.

one of the best gender-benders out there

This is the gender-bender genre at its best. Gentle Uehara, the main character, has an unrequited love for Momoi, a beautiful but rude (and in my opinion hateful) girl. When they accidentally switch bodies, everyone immediately notices the change in their behavior and comments on how much more manly Uehara has suddenly become and how much more gentle and ladylike Momoi has become. Uehara continues loving Momoi, but Momoi has no interest in him before or after the switch. While Uehara just wants to reverse the change, Momoi almost immediately decides she likes things better this way.

The twist I like the best about this manga is Uehara and Momoi's best friends. Momoi is attracted to Shina and asks her out soon after the change. Similarly, Uehara's best friend, Senbongi, starts pursuing him. For a gender-bender, it's a pretty insightful story. The switch happens pretty early on, so this volume covers a lot of ground. It's almost immediately apparent that Uehara makes a better girl than Momoi, and vice-versa, but it's unclear whether they'll remain that way for good, or if Momoi will ever return Uehara's feelings.

One thing I disliked about this volume is Momoi. I think we're supposed to hate her and her over-the-top bad personality can be funny at times, but often, her selfishness, shallowness and general meanness are too much to take. Her grandfather's (the one responsible for the body switch) frivolity is also a little annoying. The good parts more than compensate for these minor irritations though. Uehara's best friend is an especially good character; initially completely uninterested in Momoi, he almost immediately falls for Uehara after the switch. Uehara is taken aback by this aggressive side of his best friend that he's never seen. For the reader too, it's a surprise, because in the beginning, Senbongi seems like a nice but unremarkable side character. It's great seeing a totally different side of Senbongi's personality emerge, after the switch.

Anyone who enjoys gender-benders or comedies will like this story. The art is great, as well. At the pace ADV has been going though, I only hope that the next volume gets released in my lifetime.

Great place to start if you are considering becoming a landlord

First Time Landlord provides a useful introduction for anyone considering entering the property rental business. And it does emphasis that this is a business and most be treated as such. While it does not go into great depth, the book covers a wide spectrum of relevant topics and provides very useful guidance for obtaining additional information. As the book makes clear, there are many considerations involved in renting to someone, probably much more than the average person realizes. In some ways this book is a reality check for the novice thinking of becoming a landlord.

Great Resource...Keep a Reasonable Expectation

Excellent coverage of all tips and topics if you're looking for the 101 on renting out a single family home. After reading, I was able to communicate with my property manager more effectively because I could tailor my questions better. It's always easier to learn things once you know what questions to ask, and this book gave enough information to get me going in the right direction. I was able to use certain information found in this book almost immediately, with positive results. Don't expect to get in-depth with every chapter or subject matter, especially those concerning individual state or municipal laws, but you'll at least have enough know-how to keep a reasonable expectation and make appropriate decisions. Great investment!

Disappointed

I looked forward to reading this after reading the other reviews, but Divita never really settles into a comfortable voice. She did offer some constructive ideas about specific web content and design techniques to target women. I appreciated this information, and wished she would have focused her energy more in that direction--more of the how-to, and less of the disjointed commentary. Statements that are supposed to be humorous are too often condescending or arrogant. While some degree of stereotyping is expected in a book about marketing (which, after all, targets groups with similar characteristics), Divita too often describes female behaviors, then immediately defends or apologizes for them.

She also reveals a disparaging attitude toward anyone in business who is slow to embrace new technology, and specifically, selling on the Internet, but this attitude often seems hypocritical, since her book came out in 2002 and numerous sections of it--from discussions on web trends to TV commercial examples--are necessarily dated and anachronistic.

Another frustrating thing I found with Divita's writing voice was the unnecessary refrain, "What's not to like about that?", along with a continuous sense that she was working too hard to sell me something. Women are an important market--I believed this premise, so I bought the book and wanted to read Divita's insights. I am a woman; it's not difficult to convince me I belong to an important group of consumers, so the overkill of anecdotal and statistical evidence on this point was almost offensive--how could anyone believe women are not an important market? I wish Divita had focused more on specific strategies to target women, and left the hard sell of the premise to the book jacket and introductory chapters. She had me at hello, but she lost me with the same kind of car salesmanship tactics she advises against in her book.

It's clear Divita has useful insights to share regarding website design. The end of the book includes an interesting analysis of the effectiveness of several actual websites. While I didn't always agree with her conclusions, this part of the book did offer the kind of specific food for thought that I was looking for. I hope subsequent works will make use of her knowledge, in a voice that addresses the "how can I help you," as opposed to the "I told you so."

Flawed at best

This title purports to be a guide to marketing to women in the 21st century. While it does have some useful information, it is a flawed work at best: Throughout, the author decries traditional gender stereotypes, only to replace them with images no less stereotypical, and no more accurate.

A great deal of every chapter is fluff, merely repeating in different ways how women have become internet savvy, and how they do most on-line purchasing, and must be courted as a target market: Pointless, as anyone who didn't believe this wouldn't be reading the book in the first place.

Numerous examples of on-line behaviour are given, then used as proof that the example is correct: 'When Cathy is on-line she does x, y, and z': As you can see, Cathy is proving whatever point I am trying to make!

Don't get me wrong: The basic marketing techniques in the book aren't bad. The comments on web design aren't bad. And the book is correct in that women are a valuable market that shuld be courted.

But this book is more fluff than crunch. I'll be checking out the 'customers also bought' section of the website, looking for something better.

Most books on e-commerce offer advice on hardware and software, or web design, or e-mail marketing campaigns, or a dozen other pieces of doing business on the Internet. A few recent books and articles have called attention to the importance of marketing to women in the bricks-and-mortar world. Dickless Marketing: Smart Marketing to Women Online pulls all of these pieces together and explains why you need to refocus your online efforts to make sure your Web site rates a "female-friendly" score on the Dick-e-Meter.
Backed by solid research, statistics gathered into the second half of 2003, and her own survey results, Yvonne DiVita has created a roadmap for successful selling online. She provides compelling evidence that success online means selling to women (even if your target market is men; even if you sell a product or service traditionally associated with men; and even if you're selling to businesses rather than consumers).
Most important, she explains how to revamp your Web site and your business processes "to gain the trust and support of the largest and most generous group of consumers in the world." From site design details to customer service practices to creating community, DiVita teaches us how to do better. She uses dozens of examples, with screen shots and detailed analysis, to guide us.
In a chapter called, Can You Handle It?, she reviews in detail half a dozen sites for female friendliness, applying the concepts developed throughout the book to real situations. Even if your site is not one of those reviewed, you will likely find much to learn from these reviews that will apply to improve your Web presence.
You do have a Web presence, right? (As DiVita points out in the Introduction, "If you have a business, and you do not have a Web presence, it's been nice knowing you.")
Whether you do or not, you need the information she has collected and presented in her wonderfully readable, sometimes playful, writing style.

Well structured and indexed and funny

The law can be a dry and dull read, but these authors have introduced just enough humour to make the effort worthwhile. The names of almost every party in the numerous cases sprinkled throughout the book are puns or double entendres, and some of them are a little tricky to figure out, making for a nice diversion when the subject might otherwise have been tedious.
The whole arrangement of the book is meant to reflect the entire legal process and is extremely logical and accessible. It is excellently cross-referenced and makes frequent reference to the relevant sections of state and federal laws. The writing style is conversational and quite readable.
The authors take great pains to comment on those aspects of law that vary from state to state, which I found helpful considering how I was raised in one state and now live in another and took certain things for granted.
All the legal terms that are introduced are carefully explained, and facsimiles of the various legal documents, such as search and arrest warrants, are included at the end of each chapter.
One unusual feature that shows the depth of the authors' treatment is how they comment on the emotional state that defendants, victims and court personnel are typically in at various stages of the proceedings. They use this to explain how that may influence people's behavior and argue for or against certain courses of action, such as talking to police alone or waiting for a lawyer to arrive, etc.

Outstanding resource

This book provides an excellent overview of criminal law for the layperson. The authors provide a sound overview of complex topics without getting bogged down in the endless minutia inherent to criminal law.
It is also refreshing that the authors do not waste the reader's time by interjecting ideological and social policy opinions into the book.
Whether your interest in criminal law arises from intellectual curiousity or from finding yourself "in the system", I don't believe you will find a better introductory book than this.

Thinking more deeply about stewardship

If you want to raise your sights and think more broadly and more deeply about the ministry of stewardship, read this book. The phrase "steward leader" itself suggests that this is not a mere book on stewardship technique. This volume is designed to help evangelical church leaders develop themselves and others in stewardship. It's a collection, and like all such, some of the essays I found more useful than others. I particularly liked editor Mark Vincent's own essay, Rebekah Basinger's and finally, Gary Moore's provocative closing essay.

Each of the thinkers offers their own perspective, and their own answer to the question: If you had just one opportunity to convey what you are learning about stewardship in a single chapter, what would you say? These authors know that being timid in stewardship will not carry us far, and also that simply mimicking the world's fund-raising technique will also not build the kind of leaders in stewardship and support for Christ's ministry that we need.

A few highlights for me: I was inspired by Gary Hoeg's reminder of the ministry of George Mueller, who ran his ministry entirely on faith, never receiving a salary. Several of the essays, including Rebekah Basinger's, offer challenges to the ways churches and institutions have sought to "fund raise." Basinger outlines her own approach to helping givers grow, not simply give. She also reframes the recent recession: "A financial downturn can be a teachable moment for us when we fix our trust firmly on God's ultimate goodness." Gary Moore suggests "People are growing increasingly sophisticated financially, and they can sense when we are more interested in their money than their hearts. I have reason to believe that we have been interested in their money far too often."

Change Your Thinking

This book summarizes the work that Wes Willmer, Scott Rodin, and Gary Hoag have provided us in their books plus it adds more speakers to the theme of dependency upon God for the provision of funds for ministries. At 135 pages, it is a great way to cover the topic without reading a pile of books.
