Excellent Resource

I was injured at work a few months back and dozens of people have since told me the Governator's changes to Workers Comp came at the detriment of the injured worker. And my experience has certainly echoed that fact -- intentional and erroneous delays by the insurance company, stonewalling virtually any and all medical treatment, blatantly disregarding my health and well-being in the name of profit -- it's completely ridiculous, and several doctors themselves have agreed.

I attended a seminar hosted by my local Workers Comp office and they pushed me to hire a lawyer and sue the insurance company -- in effect, the State of California told me to sue the insurance company because of their blatant negligence. And all this because the Governator wanted California to be a friendlier place for corporations to do business. Well, that's all fine and dandy, but the changes came at the expense of the injured worker, and few will discover what a heinous mess this all is until a crisis arises. When an emergency hits, the last thing an injured worker should worry about is getting screwed by insurance companies. But the world is filled with injustice, and knowledge is power, so this book has proven to be a lifeline.

I found this book to be both daunting and incredibly informative at the same time. I easily get overwhelmed by all this since it depicts exactly what I'm living, and will likely be forced to continue to live with the remainder of my life. But this Nolo book has been very helpful in clarifying questions and concerns that even my lawyer wasn't able to subdue.

If you're wondering if you need this book or an attorney, my answer is simple -- get this book AND and attorney. You'll need both and will probably still get screwed.

What a shame Workers Comp in California has been messed up for an entire generation. Hopefully someone who isn't in the pocket of the insurance lobby comes along and fixes this soon. It'll be too late for me and countless others, but something needs to be done to repair this fiasco.

Bottom Line -- if you are amongst those unfortunate enough to be injured at work in the state of California, getting this book isn't an option -- it's a necessity.

Pays for Itself Many Times Over, If You File a Claim

I like what one previous reviewer wrote, "Everyone seems to go by the rule don't ask and don't tell where everything is a secret." When you get hired or injured, companies don't often hand you a pamphlet on how to file a workers comp claim, even though they are essentially required to do so. No one wants their insurance rates to go up so no one wants you to file. If you are injured on the job, the small amount that you pay for this 600 page, but easily understood, book could be returned to you many times over.

Even if you don't file, it is nice to know your rights and this book informs you every step of the way. For example, did you know you might qualify for increased benefits if your employer's seriously improper action or inaction -- such as failure to remedy an obvious safety violation (maybe even one you brought to their attention) led to your injury? However, successful petitions based on serious and willful misconduct are very rare. You also might be eligible to file a separate claim if your employer discriminated against you because you asserted your right to file a claim. Again, discrimination is hard to prove.

One type of claim that might be fast growing is sickness as a result of exposure to toxic chemicals, for example, a maid required to use a cleaning solution that makes her break out in a rash or brings on asthma-like symptoms. Sometimes is is difficult to determine how much of your disability is due to an injury on the job and how much is due to other factors. Your doctor must address this issue in their report.

One of the basics is the need to report your injury to your employer within 30 days of the time you knew of "should have known" that a disability was caused by work. One exception is if your employer knew of your injury from another source, like you complained to your supervisor about it. The book suggests you keep a "pain diary" and tells you how to do it.

Keep in mind that it may be months before you realize the link between your injury and your job. For example, at one point in my career I was exposed to a lot of toxins in the workplace. It took months of illness before I finally realized the connection (after cracking my ribs from coughing). Fortunately, my employer was immediately able to provide a reasonable accommodation that reduced my symptoms to the point that a workers comp claim wasn't warranted. If I had filed a claim, my doctor might have determined it was okay to return to work under "limited duties" or a "modified" work order to reduce my exposure. The book runs through how to document time off, how to work with your doctor and be involved in your own treatment. The book also touches on other avenues, such as filing under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the California Fair Employment and Housing Act.

The author tells you how to file an injury report, a DWC-1 form. You must file your claim within one year of the date of the injury if the company denied responsibility for your injury or within five years if the company provided benefits (paid temporary disability or medical treatment). Another factor taken into consideration, the statute of limitations doesn't begin to run until you learn of the right to file.

A large portion of the book is given over to rating your disability, figuring out a settlement amount, negotiating a settlement, preparing your case, going to trial, how to file and serve documents, appeals, forms etc. and even a section of case laws. Even if you hire a lawyer, you'll find this Nolo Press book invaluable... and, of course, they can even help you with that.

Anyone involved in a Workers Comp claim, even if you already have an attorney, will benefit from reading this book. It's lengthy, but very worthwhile. This book will give you all the information you will need to make good decisions and to know what to expect during the whole process. You will find information that your attorney may not tell you! You need to know all of your options as well as your responsibilities.

Accessible, comprehensive tax resource for small business

NOLO has been the leading publisher of legal guides for lay persons for many years. Their "Tax Savvy for Small Business" is an accessible and reasonably comprehensive guide to the main tax issues facing small businesses. It doesn't assume much about the size (employees?), form (partnership? S-corporation?), or location (home-based? separate office?) of your business, and it lays out the tax-related pros and cons of different arrangements, so it's especially good for folks who are just starting out and haven't made firm decisions about how to proceed. Business owners with well-established small firms might find their needs better met by "Deduct It! Lower Your Small Business Taxes" or a NOLO guide to their specific type of businesses, like "Your Limited Liability Company: An Operating Manual (Your Limited Liability Company (W/CD))"

My biggest gripe about this product concerns the accompanying web site, not the book. The legal updates are very brief and don't reference the book. That is, they say, "In 2012, X changed from Y to Z." They don't say, "On p. 49, we told you that you could do Y. That's not true anymore. Instead, you should do Z." The promised blog posts are very, very thin. As of today, there are three posts, and the latest was dated 18 months ago. There's one video -- a 1-minute piece with three general tax tips -- one podcast, and three links to other NOLO resources. That's it. Disappointing.

Bottom line: So, the web site is weak, and the press could provide better guidance for deciding which book you really need -- it's unclear how much overlap there is between this book and "Deduct It!", for example. Still, this book is a good resource for the small business owner or potential owner who is just starting out. It's easy to read, it covers major issues, and it offers useful and impartial tips that ought to help owners to make key decisions. Recommended.

As someone who has recently started a corporation, I wanted to have a reference book that could - in accessible language - help me navigate the world of business taxes. This book does a fantastic job covering a wide-range of tax topics that a small business owner would need to be versed on. I won't go into every chapter in the book, but you can take a peek at the table of contents on Amazon, and you'll see that the book covers quite a bit of helpful information What I love about the book is the accessible language and the many examples included throughout. The book also includes reproductions of IRS tax forms that are filled out as examples. Like I said, this is a great reference. I keep it in arms reach of me. Highly recommend!

This book is an excellent read! Dr. Lilite gives a theologically sound description of "impatience." I found it impossible to read this book without applying what was written therein. This book is an excellent resource for anyone desiring to grow spiritually or disciple others who are "serious" about growing in the Lord. I was given this book by my son along with Dr. Lilite's book When Music Meets Faith. My son said, "This is one of the best devotionals I have ever read. I found myself reading small portions of the book on a daily basis in order to prayerfully digest its contents."

I started writing it in October, 2000 on a bus heading south from Millinocket, Maine. That's where I came back into this world from an entirely different reality I had been dwelling in for a large chunk of time. Being in that other world changed my life. These words would not have been possible without the love and encouragement of many different people. First, I'd like to thank every hiker who ever read one of my bizarre, rant-like musings in a trail shelter journal and told me it was good. That validation gave me the resolve to turn my collected thoughts into an initial manuscript that I nervously shared with a handful of people. Noel Johnson, a friend and retired corporate editor graciously read through my (then) meager four-hundred- and-thirty page manifesto and suggested many ways to improve the manuscript. My father, Robert J. Maroni, Sr., read the first eighty pages-having just retrieved it from the daily mail pile-while sitting at his kitchen table. My brother, Bob Maroni (Jr.)-one of the most avid readers I know-plowed through the manuscript in a few days. In the margin, he jotted comments like, "I laughed out loud." My mom, Margaret Maroni, who had been highly supportive of my plans to hike the Appalachian Trail, still maintains a thirty-two by forty-eight-inch poster map of the trail beside her bed. I took her editorial advice to heart as I made my revisions while remembering that this story is my own. If I have offended anybody through the telling of my story, allow me to apologize in advance.These perceptions are simply my own recollections from life as I experienced it. Nothing new

I read the electronic version of this book in the library. In my opinion, it is nicely presented text, but I found no new information there. It you are familiar with the Guide to Naturalization by The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (available for free from WWW.USCIS.GOV in PDF format), you don't need this book. Questions and answers for Civic test are exactly the same, but in different order. Yes, examples in the book are different from those in the website, but still very obvious and straightforward.

i will give this book five stars if only because of it's accuracy in detailing all information. HOWEVER, nobody should spend any more money than they already have (God knows how much money has been paid to get this far!) since ANY and ALL information written on this book can be found at the immigration website, [...]

Practical and helpful advice for preparing the N-400 form and dealing with the process

We're preparing to apply for citizenship and I'd read this book after having filled out the forms. I fully expected to have to prepare a draft version of our application, review and revise it as needed. I worried that I would spend too much time reviewing and revising -- weeks or months -- out of fear of making a mistake.

I found Ilona Bray's straightforward description of the process and pitfalls helpful particularly because she offers a practitioner's practical advice. I've read other reviewers mention that you can get the same advice elsewhere, but since my own sources were limited to the instructions on how to fill out the N-400 form and Ilona Bray's book, I was relieved to find the information organized and readily available in an easy to find format.

As we opted not to hire an attorney to review our application, I wanted more than the government website and instructions to help guide me through the application and waiting process.

If you have possible issues with your application, you'll need to discuss the specifics with an attorney. But if you meet all the requirements and just want to make sure that your application is filed completely and that the process goes smoothly, Becoming a U.S. Citizen is worth reading, keeping on hand, and referring to throughout the process. I found several tips and suggestions that have helped me in preparing my N-400 application. The tips are the sort that an immigration law practitioner might give you but fortunately without spending several thousands on an immigration lawyer.

Vivid, poignant, munificent . . . Maneos

Pietros Maneos delivers an exciting, emotional, deeply felt collection: POEMS of BLOOD and PASSION. Unrestrained, but not unaware, Mr. Maneos plunges his pen straight through our hearts, lavishly lamenting his lost love, Natalia. Unwilling to entertain even the notion of complacency, Maneos extracts and creates, weaving and interweaving witty ironies and contradictions. What impresses most: Pietros Maneos is on a consistent level, at all times. Intense, intense, intense. No chance for rest; the reader is assaulted, challenged, propelled and fulfilled. A raging read, from beginning to end. Masterfully done.

Well, then again he wrote this poems with absolute integrity, sheer honesty and most of all heights of Beautiful large hearted Maneos's expression of thoughts! Was been articulated in a very sense of his writing ability to illustrate or demonstrate in a very passionate ways about his illicit love affair with the dashing beauty from Brazil.

And of course as a avid traveler of many great Historical cities, fond lover of Hellenism, natural landscape, Maneos can't just stop transforming this entire prose in a very Symphonic manner.
It's almost felt like a story of, Paris of Troy and Helen of Sparta. They are just not meant to be together:
here is the Greek Mythology comes to my mind :
Trojan war, Paris of Try is chosen by Zeus to decide who is the greatest beauty Hera, Athena or Aphrodite. He chooses Aphrodite because she promised him the most beautiful mortal woman in the world as, a wife, Helen. The other goddesses were enraged by this and because of Helen's abduction by Paris they brought about the Trojan war.
In Maneos's own words:

''she loves me more than even Dido loved Aeneas,
More than Narcissus loved himself,
And more than Helen loved Paris.
But she has returned to her loveless Menelaus-
To his cold chest.
Yet how my spurned breast burns for her!''

His ability to prose in a very sensitive yet melancholic way with the Romantic Aesthetic in mind and very beautiful soul : here is the glimpse of his work where he brings in the historic and heroic, way of expressing his love, passion, war and rage .

''Our love is as historic as the epic battle of Actium.
Yet, this time our souls will vanquish famed Augustus,
This time we will be as victorious as the glorious dawn, Who every morning storms the night with it's invincible light.
This time Agrippa will be stripped of glory as we triumphantly dine on Samian wine.
All of the world will say: Today, love alone has humbled proud Rome! ''

And in his phrases, he literally explodes his love, desire, heights of his passion for his lover in a very symphonic fashion in some paragraphs.
Here I may give you few of the preview of his work:

''You are the north star of my soul.
For you radiate like eight suns lit with liquid amber,
You shine in every single one of my lines,
And you dine from the core of my cornered heart.''
''Her eyes -two sunbursts bursting with myrrh.
Her breasts-two mountains separated by a glorious glen.
Her legs-two stalks of liquid lava, burning me with every touch.''

Often compares her to nature of Glorious goddess or at times nature of strength, his beautiful language of Romanticism takes his writing to the another heights, as if she was the Goddess Venus or Aphrodite -the goddess of lust, love, passion, beauty and music.

Or at times Peitho:The goddess of personification of persuasion and seduction.
Or he is the Kamadeva:God of love and she is the Rati: Goddess of love and lust.
And most of all how the romantic poetry expresses his love, lust is drifting and twisting between nature and mythological gods and goddesses.

He was the divine God and she was the Glorious goddess, where their love should be worshipped and worth building a divine temple !!

The entire poetry is set in to 2 parts, Life then the Death.....
It sort of highlights when in love, and then when he realized she is getting attracted to another man and eventually it's over but he is still has so much love to give, he goes through the phases of anger, denial and acceptance .
So here he goes:(this is very beautifully written as above)

''Her love is as crazy as gypsy raving in piazza,
Yey my love is as rationale as a medieval professor,
As logical as a theorem based on starbursts,
And as thoughtful as a school of ancient sages.
Her love is as divided as two opposing armies.
Yet my love is as one empire of light.
Her love is as mild as a contented child.
Yet my love is as a flaring pyre,
As wil as a Grecian lyre,
And as wils as thunderstorms of storming fire.''

As I am great lover and addicted to Pietros Maneos's work of art , first when I read his Novella ''The Italian Pleasures of Gabriele Paterkallos'' that's it. This is just what I want to read....But how many in our generation or in 21st century can write like Maneos???!!!Big question!!? So as we are still able to celebrate his poetry and novella, so shall enjoy it and hope Mr.Pietros Maneos has more in store for us soon.

I have paramount of respect for Pietros for his Graceful way of writing , which is like classical symphony to my senses.

Person like Pietros Maneos only deserve to live a life of a Glorious Greek God or to die of Heroic death of Grecian Heroes like Leonidas the Brave, till the every blood of his body drains or meanders like very glens of the Brammabella.(Long live my friend like those immortal Spirits)Hope your Cyprus dream will never come true.
I was watching the documentary on Lord Byron yesterday, where he leaves for Greece to fight the Turks, where he believed not by writing but by doing things!

But to me Lord Pietros Maneos!! if I may so choose to call him! he is not only writes but also practices what he writes!!!So that might make him very special writer and a Hellenist.

Yahuti tantalizes, tempts and torments

From the initial prickling Dedication, "to Joe, who disappeared into the mists...." to the Prologue's ending "What of the missing? Where are they? ...there is no accountability for them...we have been here all along - among you - against you," I am at a standstill with the balance of life's responsibility until I turn the final page and discover what happened to Douglas Mallory, who is this `committee', what events did they force upon Mallory that compels him to say, "Something's are more important than self; some are worse than death."?

As a post-Vietnam war raised child I know little of the real events that surrounded my upbringing. Yahuti not only brings tormenting possibility to light, but comforts suspicion that yes, "the little man who was not there" may have indeed wrecked havoc on our world.

Brosch, a first time novelist has written other essays prior to writing this first of a series of books. His inspiration comes from first hand knowledge of jungle warfare experiences while a Green Beret in Vietnam. His book is by no means trite. It is a stimulating read about a character, who on a clandestine mission in Laos, is plucked from the middle of the jungle and cast into an abyss from which he could find no other alternative but to be subservient to his "abductors". His adversaries pull him deeply and intentionally into this corruption.

For the next thirty years, he lays the foundation for his escape back into the world he once knew. His revenge is sweet as he chases down his old enemies and deals with them in his own way.

His approach to the writing of his book is unique. Brosch uses the English language well and builds his characters wisely. One can only imagine what parts may be real, borrowed from others' experience or a figment of a fertile imagination--or all of the above. He tangles his tale of the character's abduction, uses his credible military and political genius and at the same time vents his frustration with the system. He makes the reader THINK.

I will not spoil it by telling the reader more than I should; I am looking forward to Brosch's next writing in his series.

Raising eyebrows and opening your mind

This book has got to be one of the best of the year so far. Brosch's not so delicate approach on the subject of POW's and MIA's will have you asking your self if this is true or made up. Once you pick this one up you'll be in a spell bound trance to continue to read and read and read. A good page turner with a lot of descriptive insight. G.E.B's back gound in intelligence field and as former Green Beret has definately made this book stand out from your typical "spy" novels. Pick it up, read it, and open your mind.
