A good start to learn about Post Traumatic Slavery diseases

I read this book on a train and overall it was decent read. The book discussed issues that Africans in America have faced historically and currently, which was not anything new. The authors also discussed some of their own issues growing up black and male in a country that was founded upon racism and genocide, nothing new there either. However,what was refreshing was the culturally revelant therapies and solutions provided in the book. The authors also gave some excellent references and ideas for formulating an Afro-centric therapy based system for all areas of life. Overall, I suggest this book especially for mental health and social workers. The authors also have their own center which can be found at this web address(these brothers are doing some great work) [...] It is worth a look.

Julia Nissley was Probate Administrator with the Los Angeles law firm of Silverberg, Rosen, Leon and Behr for many years. She is an honors graduate of the Attorney Assistant Training Program in Probate Administration at the University of California--Los Angeles School of Law, and a member of the California Association of Legal Document Assistants. Julia is a native Californian and enjoys playing tennis and riding trains with her husband, Ron. essential for Californians, before death as well as after

If you're in California and you've just lost a loved one, or have been named an executor, the complexities of California wills & trust law is the last thing you should contend with. Nolo has provided a one-volume guide, with checklists and very clear prose, to guide you through the process of settling the estate, getting through probate court on your own, dealing with wills and living trusts. It's very helpful in tone and scope. Even if you do need to hire a lawyer this will still be a handy reference for working with counsel. As someone who has a California law degree and can testify to the idiosyncratic, often mind-numbing aspects of California Wills & Trusts and California community-property law, I can tell you that this book rings true and has provided guidance that is accurate, easy to grasp, and with no redundancies.

The book does stress that, if you need a lawyer, it should be somebody familiar with probate law. I cannot emphasize this enough -- this area of California law is arcane and most lawyers, general practice or specializing in another field of law, won't have the needed expertise. You may need a lawyer, might I add, not after death but when planning a large or complicated estate, for drafting airtight wills or for creating a living trust. This book does show just how much effort and expense you might avoid if you have a trust.

A note on same-sex domestic partnerships or marriages: in this term (2012-2013) the U.S. Supreme Court may take up several cases on this, including one major case involving inheritance. This won't change what Nolo has written but may make the tax and inheritance issues more accessible for many more California residents, and Nolo's website updates will be even more helpful than ever.

A special recommendation: this book is not just for the newly-bereaved or for newly-appointed executors, but for anybody planning their estate and need to think about wills, trusts and possible heirs. A bit of preparation before the fact may very well provide for loved ones and head off uncertainties, complexity or disputes over an estate. Family disputes over estates, in particular, can be wrenching, and this book provides means of avoiding all that, before it happens.

A LIFE SAVER ~ Filled with useful information & pull out forms to use

A life saver!! It seems that nowadays there are NO lawyers willing to help you if you do not have a will and need to go to Probate...unless you have property and/or estate with a value of $500,000.00 +. So this is THE BOOK that you will need. You have to read this book. This is the book that will walk you through it, step by step. Make sure you have a notebook, and a highliter as you read. In the back there are the necessary forms that you will need to complete and this wonderful book even walks you through filling those forms out for the most part.

Yes, that is why I say a LIFE SAVER!! It is a thick book to read but I also learned that usually you don't have to do this sort of thing in a rush and no matter what YOU CAN DO THIS!!

Amazing Resourse

For someone that knows NOTHING about probate, this book was a tremendous help at a time when I had beyond enough tragedy and drama in my life. I'm younger than 40 and was dealing with the after affects of losing someone who didn't have a living trust or will, so I was forced to learn about the process. The people at the courthouses are ridiculous and worthless for help and any resources they recommend are just as bad or want tons of money for things that you can find in this book. this book is worth every penny and then some. the forms are awesome and explanations are easy to understand or easy enough to get you started in the right direction. If you are at all considering going at this on your own, this is the book to guide you. Good luck!

I served in Fox Force - The Recon Platoon of 1 / 14th infantry 3rd Bde 4th Inf Div with Terry Bender for six months. I was part of the actions he mentions in almost every instance regarding Fox. I was only able to meet with Terry once in the years afterwards. Sadly, he died. With many other Fox Veterans I was proud to honor him by attending his funeral.

This is a true story folks.

"Orphans of Honor" was a very well written book about the day to day accomplishments, sacrifices, frustrations, and allegiance to one another as soldiers in war time. Though it was written about the Vietnam Nam conflict, the first hand perspective lends to the reader an understanding and sense of gratitude towards the soldiers fighting for our country in all of our country's battles. Soldiers do not get to decide which battles they will participate in, especially during the day of the draft, but we owe them a great debt for their willingness to sacrifice their lives, limbs, and peace of mind for our service. "Orphans of Honor" helped me to more fully realize this. Thanks to Mr. Terry Bender, the author, for his excellent insight. I highly recommend the book.Orphans of Honor

The best handbook on how to protect and use written works.

This is one of more than 30 Nolo books I have been using for the last 3 years in my small business. As usual, Nolo doesn't disappoint in this comprehensive book on copyright law and instructions on how to protect your written works.
The book comes with many tear out forms with the electronic versions of the forms on CD-ROM. Common and not so common topics are addressed. I was immediately interested in the Chapters on Copyright Basics, Copyright Notice, and Copyright Registration. These three chapters gave me the most vital information I needed to know about Copyrights. For example, I didn't know that works don't need to be registered to be protected by the Copyright Law but if registered with the Copyright office in a timely fashion, the owner gets some special benefits in the case of copyright infringement. I also understood the different treatment given to published and unpublished works.
The sections on copyrights in the online world was of even greater interest to me as I am in the process of creating some websites with online content. I had not known that I could register my online work (as long it met the same requirements for registering copyrights on normal works). The chapter on online works also has detailed information on how deep links are treated, etc.
The section on Fair Use was very helpful as it explained as clearly as possible the circumstances under which you CAN copy a copyrighted work as long as it met the Fair Use guidelines.
Even the less frequently researched topics like 'Transferring Copyright Ownership' and 'International Copyright Protection' are addressed in sufficient detail.
All in all, this is a very important book if you have any kind of work that you want to copyright or if you are considering the implications of copying somebody's work under the Fair Use guidelines. The book is by no means an easy read but Nolo does an excellent job of explaining this fairly complicated subject in plain English for the ordinary person (which seems to be the goal in all of their books). I went to the Nolo website for the latest information on the Copyright Law and wasn't disappointed there either. They have a terrific FAQ section that explains in great detail some of the latest information pertaining to the Copyright Law (especially as applicable in the online world).

I have to grit my teeth in anger when I think of all the wasted hours I've spent reading web site and magazine articles written by people who had no idea what they were talking about in regard to the often confusing world of copyright law.

The simple purchase and reading of Fishman's book would have saved me all that time, trouble, and confusion. He does a great job of laying out everything I've ever wanted to know about copyright law, in understandable terms...and alleviates any doubt by presenting brilliantly clear "examples" of almost every point.

If you want to learn as much as possible about copyright, without having to spend years becoming a copyright attorney, this is the book for you.

My Copy is Getting Dog-Eared

After doing quite a bit of research on the internet on copyright law, I purchased several copyright related books. The best of the bunch, in my mind, is "The Copyright Handbook," by Stephen Fishman, written to address copyright as it applies to written works. Published in March, 2000, the 5th edition of this book is still up to date with the copyright law of the United States.
Fishman does a good job of simplifying complicated issues. This is consistent with the goal of the publisher, Nolo, in publishing "quality law books & software for non-lawyers�" that are "easy to use."
Included in the book are segments on issues and topics such as what is covered by copyright, what works are protected, duration of copyright, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the Sony Bono Copyright Extension Act, fair use, electronic publishing, and protecting works on the internet.
I keep my copy on a shelf just above my computer that I can readily reach when copyright questions arise.

About the Author
Stephen Fishman is the author of many Nolo books, including  Deduct It! Lower Your Small Business Taxes, Every Landlord's Tax Deduction Guide and Home Business Tax Deductions: Keep What You Earn—plus many other legal and business books. He received his law degree from the University of Southern California and after time in government and private practice, became a full-time legal writer.

Finally a good copyright guide

After getting many different explanations on using public domain works I am so happy to have found this guide. A lawyer in the field put this together and, as I suspected, just putting a new cover on an old book doesn't make it a completely new work as I've been told.

This is the first book I've found that goes through the rules of copyright with many examples and explanations of any grey areas to be aware of. He covers the rules for each of the different time periods the government has made changes to copyright laws. You will need to work with the laws that are in place for each time period.

The author breaks down the ins and outs of each type of work in its own chapter (books, art work, music, plays, movies, software, etc). You don't have to read cover to cover, just go to the type of work you're interested in. You can then move to the chapter that covers the time period of the piece you are interested in. Guidance is given on how to research copyrights as well as where you can search on line as well as off.

Some may say the book is repetitive but you must remember that the book is a reference, you don't have to read it front to back.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in public domain works. Also, you are given the link on the NOLO site to get any updates and additional info for this book.

This book is really more than a book about public domain: it is a 440+ page explaination of copyright law as it related to Writing, music, art and more.

Grab your highlighter and start reading. The laws have changed radically several times, and the most recent changes made understanding the law nothing short of difficult. Fishman's book is well-written, with examples that offer clear explanation which are easy to understand and illustrate some of the more difficult-to-understand nuances of the law and how it applies to a variety of circumstances. Even if you don't think that using public domain sources is where you may be headed, lots of people including writers and artists would benefit from having a better understanding of copyright law and how it might affect their own work.

This book is an incredibly valuable resource and not nearly as dry reading as you would think!
