Nice series, but...

The only reason "Angelic Days" has any cachet at all is because of the original anime series that it's based on, "Neon Genesis Evangelion". If you're looking for a manga series to read, start with either the "Eva" manga, or better still, the original anime.

The characters of "Angelic Days" are all from "Eva", but this is an alternate-universe where certain key events haven't happened yet. So the characters have grown-up in nearly a normal setting, except for the existence of NERV and the technology to create the giant robots known as Evangelion. It's hard to say more without divulging spoilers.

Point of fact, the characters of "Days" are taken from a Japan-only video game, which in turn was based on a dream-sequence from an episode of "Eva". Most of the storyline so far read like a stereotypical high school romance manga, which is to say there's nothing really to distinguish it from any other anime story set in a high school... unless you can compare it to the original anime.

I give "Days" as high a rating as I did because I appreciate the fanboy fantasy-premise where the characters are normal boys and girls ("Gee, wouldn't it be neat if Rei were, like, sociable and you could talk to her..."). I'm not sure a random reader would see more in the story than a tangled-tale of high-school hormones set in a sci-fi japanese high school.

A good alternative to the anime.

First of all, let me just say I'm completely obsessed with Evangelion. I loved the series, read the manga, and am now waiting impatiently for Angelic Days Vol. 3.

At first, I approached Angelic Days with caution. The artwork doesn't seem that good at first and the mood was a sharp contradiction to that of the original series. However, I soon began enjoying it much more than I expected. The humor is pretty good, the original charaters are present and pretty much unchanged(except for Rei, who has become the exact opposite of the quiet, introspective Rei of the series), and at long last the relationship between Shinji and Asuka has been brought to the forefront.

Not much Eva action has been seen yet- only one battle has been fought- but the story thus far signals much chaos ahead. However, most of the story will probably stay centered on the numerous love triangles that exist between the characters, and I personally have no problem with that.

To all Eva-fans: Read this NOW.

To all critics: Accept it and love it.

The Return of the Evas

Aaaaaaand here come the Evas. I guess Evangelion wouldn't be the same without them, though I was hoping this alternate universe would be able to play a straight school time story. Even so, they are downplayed enough that the characters take front and center stage, which is a good thing; our favorite Evangelion characters really get an added layer of depth to their personalities. We see a lot more of Shinji's classmates, and Shinji himself is not COMPLETELY helpless...In fact, I am enjoying where this manga is headed. The one downside is that the art is very poor. Many backgrounds are just dots and blank spaces, and the characters themselves are inconsistent. The dialogue sometimes becomes a jumble of stupid exclamations, also, handicapping the reader's ability to decipher who says what. In all honesty, this does not prevent it from being a story worth following (by an Evangelion fan, anyway).

A happy trip back in time!

I purchased The Purple Hat Gang after a nudge from one of my girlfriends. Although I was 19 and not 13 as the girls in the book were back in 1961, I was lulled right back to that time frame and relived it all. The Purple Hat Gang is a story about a look into the hearts and minds of those "on the edge" ages of 12 and 13. It's sweet and rough, it will make you laugh and cry. It is a wonderful book and a pleasure to read.

A pleasure to read.

This is a wonderful book by an excellent author. The characters are endearing and the story well written. If you're not drawn into it, you must have a heart of stone. You can really feel the joy that comes from pure friendship by reading this book. The obvious care given to this story makes it apparent that the author poured her heart out onto the pages. Highly recommended.

Oh to be thirteen again!

Ms. Kristen has captured that wonderful excitement that we've all felt when we went from a child to an adult overnight. Or thought we did! It's a great book because its message is ageless. The relationships and feelings expressed by the characters are as relevant today as they were in 1961. A definite must-have book!

About the Author
Patricia and Russ Wittberger are the parents of six children, the youngest of which, Jennifer, died from heroin.Because of this,Russ and Pat have sought to comfort other families in substance bereavement.

Pat,formerly a professional actress/dancer,wrote the scripts for "Jenny's Journey" drug misuse video and presentations;has contributed an article based on an incident in Jenny's life for the magazine,"Ashore" as well as several chapters for a book being written by British journalist Fiona Griffiths.

Russ is a graduate of Marquette University's College of Journalism and currently director of marketing for Metro Networks.This follows a 25-year career in broadcast management.

The Wittbergers, founders and sole support of the outreach programs, "Jenny's Journey" and G.R.A.S.P. (Grief Recovery After Substance Passing)reside in San Diego, California.

For Parents Who Are Suffering the Final Blow from Their Child's Drug Abuse

This book is simple and to the point. It is not an analysis of addiction, or of how people get there. It's simply to help parents cope with the fear they have probably spent years worrying about - the death of their child from drug/substance abuse. It is heartfelt advice, and feels like you are talking with another parent who knows exactly what you've been through and are now feeling-because they have. Strongly recommended for parents, friends, and family members. One of few books addressing this topic specifically and well worth buying.

Surviving the ultimate loss: The death of a child

The Wittbergers' book is profound and poignant. If you've suffered the loss of a child you will relate to Pat and Russ's heartbreak. Their book will help you through this grief process.

You'll realize that you are not alone in this journey. Read it and reread it and treasure it. I know it will help you.

My husband and I also suffered their heartbreak, losing our 31 year old son to the disease of addiction. No parent should survive their child and it is to the Wittbergers' credit that they opened their hearts to share their story with the world in the hope of helping others.

Love this book

If you are in need of answers and support after losing your child to a drug overdose, you should read this book. Written by the Wittbergers, parents of Jenny, who died of a drug overdose right before her 21st birthday, it details the devastation one feels at the sudden, unexpected and sad death of one's own child to drugs. Beautifully written with compassion and understanding for this unique type of grief. Since losing my own son of 23 years just 6 months ago to a drug overdose, finding ways to survive and face living the rest of my life without my son has been a moment by moment struggle. This book was a huge help to me.

Don't waste your money on this book, save it for the filing fees

This book assumes you have little if not Zero knowledge about the immigration process. If you are looking to get this book it is likely you have visited a few sites and even consulted the USCIS website about how to go about your own immigration concerns. If you have done some research and hope that this book will supplement all the info you've gathered online, you will be sorely disappointed. It provides an introduction to the immigration process through marriage but does not give substantial resource on how to go about filing your application. No updated information about forms applicable or necessary for either K based or AOS petitions and how to file them, how to apply for EAD, what to write on your application and how to interview.

I needed info for a very straightforward case of Adjustment of Status for a family based spousal petition on a foreign spouse inside the US that is in status with a B2 visa. This is not a complicated case and all I needed was inside info on forms, timelines and what to do and not to do when filing for this type of petition. The book did not provide any useful information--at least not anything you cannot glean from merely searching the internet.

The book gives you a very watered down introduction to marriage based visas which is useless for the lay. If you buy this book, be prepared to hire a lawyer because you cannot go through the process on your own with just this as your resource. Don't waste your money. You are better off visiting internet resources like immihelp or visajourney. They provide up to date information and procedures on how to file marriage based visa applications with forums for people that need more help about their case. If I didn't order the kindle version this book would be returned! Very disappointed.

Update:

Managed to file USCIS forms without ever opening or consulting this book. My main resource was the USCIS website, Immihelp, and stalking the Visajourney message boards. You will be amazed at the wealth of information these websites provide. They have updated forms for all the category visa applications and have corresponding instructions with sample forms for your reference. The instructions are thorough and clear. If you can take the time to nitpick every detail about filing these forms then you will do fine without consulting a lawyer. But then, the choice of doing the forms by yourself or assisted by counsel really depends on the case. Complicated ones, involving disqualifications or certain visa violations should probably consult an attorney, however, for straight forward cases like mine--you'll be fine doing it yourself and just putting in the time to do the research. And yes, before you buy this book go and visit the sites i suggest you AVOID AT ALL COST and save your money for the filing fees. Don't waste it with this book. Just be patient and do your research, don't regret paying for this thing. It is totally useless. I would give it ZERO stars if I could.

Good Reference Book - But Not As Much Info As I Wanted

I started out with an earlier edition version of this book, but I doubt that much has been improved in this latest edition. You can be the judge the hard way. This is the voice of experience.

Now that my fiancee has just now arrived here from the Philippines, I can say that this book is useful, but still inadequate. However, there is simply not good detailed information to be successful with this book alone. I've been reading my book as I have gone through the various stages and I still have to ask my consultant questions. Although this is a very thick book with lots of forms and examples, it is still too generalized. The book tries to cover every possible scenario but in doing so, the layout is confusing and insufficient for any specific case.

My situation was very straightforward. I am widowed and my fiancee has never been married nor had any children. I have two children who are fully grown. So I don't think my situation could be any simpler. Thankfully I hired a USA based consultant who specialized in Asia and even he wasn't really up to date on everything. Procedures continue to change. A fiancee visa is too long a process to take the risk of making even the slightest of mistakes or omissions. You could end up starting over or usually being seriously delayed. There are just too many details that are missing in this book - things like details of backup documentation to submit for the applications, how to prepare for the medical exam and how to properly prepare for the make it or break it embassy interview.

From the day that my fiancee visa petition was received by the Department of Homeland security until the day she arrived was exactly 40 weeks to the day. There was not a single day of delay. It just takes a long time to get processed. However, without my consultant, I would have lost at least six weeks waiting for the NVC letter to arrive. Simple tip: Don't wait, phone the NVC to get your case number a week or two after you get the USCIS approval letter. See if that is mentioned anywhere in this book!

If I had depended solely on this book, I think my fiancee would still be waiting for the embassy interview. You can try to do this cheaply and you might be successful, but I strongly believe most people would end up making mistakes and providing inadequate information and mess up or dramatically delay their application. A USA based consultant will cost about $1000 to get you from the beginning through the Adjustment of Status phase. I am just about at the point of preparing to get married now. The paperwork for the Adjustment of Status is as daunting as the fiancee visa. And even if the K1 visa forms are perfect, it does not guarantee you that your fiancee can get a permanent visa or green card. We have another two years to go before her temporary visa can become a permanent visa. From the time we met on-line until she gets her permanent residence visa will be about four years. I met her 1.75 years ago. It is a very long process, but you can make it a lot longer if you mess up.

Anyway, I strongly encourage any serious person not to depend solely on this book even though it is a very good reference book. I think it could have been made more useful if more practical details were listed. However, I think that there would need to be a country-by-county section to cover everything. The Philippines has more than double the number of fiancee visas of the next country, Mexico. So I think that it should at least have dedicated sections for the Philippines and Mexico. Actually the next three countries make up most of the fiancee visas. It wouldn't take that much more to write to cover 90% of the countries.

Great resource! Saved us $$$$

This book saved us thousands of dollars of lawyers fees. My fiancee and I consulted, left a deposit, and later found out that what was promised, was not what was going to be delivered. We bought this book for research, and ended up following all it's advice and made it all the way through without a hitch! my wife and step-children are now residents! I highly recommend this book to anyone that needs help with the immigration process.

From the Author
My dream of writing has been with me since high school but for years it remained dormant. Over the years I've had a lot of dreams and many of them came true. I dreamed of designing and building my own house and I did. I dreamed of learning to fly and I did. Finally as I settled into retirement I realized the time had come when I had to write or shelve the dream. Several years ago in the dead of winter, I wrote a two-act play about the private side of teachers. After finishing the play, I set it aside and wrote a second play about six residents in a nursing home waiting for death. I was making the dream come true but it was only part way, as I always wanted to write a novel. That's when I decided to expand the first play into a novel, giving me a chance to delve deeper into some of the characters and moving the story beyond the teachers' lounge. That play became the basis for my first novel, "The Private Lives of Teachers." I chose to write about teachers because I am one but more importantly I wanted a play and a novel that focused on their lives and struggles and not the usual "teacher saves student" story.

A friend asked me what it was like writing a novel. I replied that it reminded me of the first house that I built. It was exciting but it was work, hard work. Once it was finished all I wanted to do was sit back and enjoy the house. That's when the second guessing started as I looked about and realized a door here instead of there would have been better or a window over there instead of here would give more light and so forth. And you know where all the mistakes are located. (Forty-five years later that house still stands and I think it is one of the nicest in town.) That's how I feel about my novel. I want to sit back and enjoy it but I've started second guessing about how it might have been better if I had only yadda, yadda, yadda.

Please be forewarned that this story is "R" rated for language and sexual scenes.

About the Author
Mr. Wellman is a retired teacher who has spent thirty-five years teaching high school psychology and sociology in Illinois. He's also taught journalism and advised the publishing of school newspapers and yearbooks.

"The Private Lives of Teachers" is his first novel. Prior to "...Private Lives..." he wrote two unpublished plays. His second novel, "Payson Heights," will be published in 2006. Currently, he is writing his third novel.

Mr. Wellman lives with his wife, Ellie, in Elk Grove Village, a suburb northwest of Chicago.

When he's not writing he's golfing, working on the house, and until recently he was teaching people to fly.

In his thirty-five years of teaching, he has taught at Joliet East, Kankakee, and McLean-Waynesville high schools. His other work experiences include a stint at radio station WCAZ, Carthage, Illinois, and as a part time reporter for a local newspaper.

A Jolly Good Romp

This book was a thoroughly enjoyable read! Sherlock Holmes and the ever faithful Dr. Watson have returned in fine style. The reader is immersed from the beginning with an assassination attempt on the life of Holmes through the twists and turns in the plots and subplots, including the theft of a world famous diamond, to the gratifying conclusion. The author obviously spent considerable time doing painstaking research for historical facts, language and location. It would be gratifying to see more adventures of the Great Detective from this writer who has captured the essence of Holmes and Watson so well!

I tried to get through this slim novel, but it was like reading a story that Basil Rathbone rejected for a movie script. Watson is a bumbler and the Irregulars are treated with more respect. No clues given along the way to aid the reader-we are just barely along for the duration.

Godsend for the new caretaker

I was put into the role of medical decision maker without warning when my otherwise healthy mother fell down the stairs and broke her neck. I am grateful that she already had all the important legal documents I needed, advance medical directive and durable power of attorney, in place. So I had the power to make decisions, but not the knowledge. In meeting after meeting with helpful hospital staff and the person in charge of helping me file for Medicaid I felt overwhelmed by my lack of understanding of what the terms they were using really meant. Last night I bought this for Kindle and didn't go to bed until I had finished all the applicable chapters.

In the coming year she may need anything from living at a skilled nursing facility to in-home care, and thanks to this book I understand now what each type of care is called, what exactly that entails, how much to expect it to cost, how to find information on facilities, and how much help to expect in paying for it from insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid. The chapters on what Medicare and Medicaid do and don't cover based on marital status and assets were detailed yet totally understandable. This book has made a huge difference to me and I will be recommending it to my mother's siblings as well.

About the Author
Benjamin Norman Pierce was born in Denver, Colorado at 4 degrees of Virgo, Scorpio Ascending, in 1962, moving to Wausau, Wisconsin on his 2nd birthday and leaving on his 23rd. He has been a professional dish-washer for 15 years, a trade he entered in the process of earning BA's in philosophy, history, and creative writing from the University of Minnesota, Saint Cloud, in 1989. He lived in Sophia, Bulgaria for two and a half years, teaching history at First English Language Gymnasium of Sophia, participating in the expatriate writing circles there, and taking time to learn painting. He currently resides in Nottingham, a co-operatively owned house in Madison, Wisconsin, and is a frequent participant at open-mike readings.

Snuck Past Death and Sleep

The characters in this novel are quite original. The author has a very unique way of delving into the characters' thoughts and motivations, making them complex and occasionally perplexing. The setting and mood of the book are engrossing and it has a climactic ending. It transcends any specific topics of focus (coming of age, homosexuality, etc.) Good book!

Snuck Past Death and Sleep was a happy surprise.

Very engaging read. There is a poetic attention to language. Snuck Past Death and Sleep is a monster of a book, features myriad intertwining plot lines, and deals intelligently with a number of philosophical topics, violence, politics, religion, etc and is populated also by very three-dimensional, very real-seeming characters who alternatively conspire with and plot against one another in interesting ways. The climax and conclusion are executed with precision and the result is both surprising and satisfying. The layout of the book seems to have been painstakingly assembled, but it reads quite naturally and without confusion. I finished SPDaS several months ago and it unsurprisingly continues to exist in my imagination in a big way, which I think is not a bad way to assess the quality of these sorts of things. Recommended!

She Was An Amazing Person

I had Mrs. Ritter for English class at Cobb Middle School in Tallahassee. My two sisters and I all remember her as a formidable woman, strict, fair, and an excellent teacher. I can still clearly remember how excited she was when we listened to the news during her class as John Glenn made his famous first flight.
This is a great book. The details that the author shares in the struggles of her family, and other civilians, to survive the war are fascinating reading. And what Mrs. Ritter had to do to rescue her children was phenomenal, just an amazing read.

Mrs. Ritter was my 8th grade English teacher in Tallahassee. I found this biography highly interesting. In class, she enthralled us with stories of her days in Germany. I enjoyed reading the "untold" aspects of her life there. She was truly a remarkable lady.

Incredible story.

This story is about a mother who lived in Germany at the time of WW2
Although she faced a difficulty so many times ,she never gave up to love people. She made every effort to save her children and made many friendships with German and helped each other.
I leared a lot of things as a mother and as a person.
