San Francisco Patent Attorney David Pressman is a graduate of Penn State University (BSEE) and George Washington University Law School (JD) where he was on the Law Review. In this book, Verrill escorts the reader on an extraordinary adventure from Pacifica (California) to Afghanistan, and through 29 countries (including Palestine) along the way.

Like a gem, Verrill’s chronicles are brilliant and multifaceted. Although the impetus for the book were the events of 9/11, the book is more than the author’s pursuit of trying to answer the question of why this tragedy occurred. It’s about a Rotarian’s quest to "uproot ignorance and provide hope to the oppressed." And, it’s about an American pioneer exploring not only the disparities in the world, but the common human element. Most of all, it’s about Verrill’s journey of self-discovery as he connects with humanity, and realizes that there is no place like "home sweet home" and the importance of family.

Verrill’s writing style is witty and refreshing with a brutally honest perspective on the world around him and also of himself. For instance, Chris writes candidly about his little sister’s boyfriend, and even the Tower of Pisa and the Pyramids of Egypt do not escape his scrutiny.

For those who enjoy comedy, this book contains madcap adventures sure to illicit a chuckle or two. You are dared to read about Verrill’s escapade in Greece with the "Psycho Pink Palace Bus Driver" without thinking about a Charlie Chaplin comedy routine. Another amusing entry results from the use of a Swiss keyboard. And, his conversation with the finance minister of Jalalabad, Afghanistan is priceless.

Overall, this book is a must read. It inspires the reader to follow Verrill’s visionary lead to "just make the world a little better than when we got here." Chris calls this his "Running Water Campground Theory." If one man (Verrill) can follow this to heart without letting terrorist threats or SARS interfere with his mission to implement a vocational program for women in Afghan refugee camps, just imagine what we can accomplish together as a society.

From Afghanistan to Albania, Kuwait to Kenya, while war raged in Iraq, the author set out on an adventure to discover firsthand what the world thinks of American foreign policy since September 11. Chris Verrill, a non-profit director and volunteer with a mission, journeyed to 29 countries in an attempt to learn and perhaps make a little bit of difference in the world. INNOCENCE ABROAD

Hunter S. Thompson's 1966 book Hell's Angels is a rather tedious ode to the repellent bikers and their supposed ethos that is redeemed only at the very end when they beat the stuffing out of the author and make an obvious hash of everything he's written up to that point. Chris Verrill is an altogether different man than Mr. Thompson was--it seems fair to say he's even one of the good men contemplated by his title--and this is an altogether different book than Thompson's. It details the world trip Mr. Verrill took in the wake of 9-11, seeking to start up an educational project in Afghanistan on behalf of the Pacifica Rotary Club. But the Mr. Verrill who sets out on this journey does have something of the innocence and naivety of a Candide and by journey's end has had a hefty dose of reality beaten into him. Good men may be required to do something to combat evil in the world, but that doesn't mean that the world will accommodate them by getting rid of red tape, bureaucracy, and other forms of foolishness.

One of the chief attractions of the book is the pleasant demeanor and sunny outlook on life that Mr. Verrill brings to his quest. Though not blind to America's faults he is confident that we mean well even in the more controversial aspects of the War on Terror. He's not a George Bush supporter, but is also unwilling to disavow him and the Administration's attempts to liberalize the Middle East. He'd prefer that we'd had the U.N. imprimatur for the Iraq war, but no doubt that it's worth deposing Saddam. The many misunderstandings of America by the people he meets genuinely pain him, just as their own cultures fascinate him. He seems certain that if only we could all get together and know each other better we'd all get along.

The first half of the book is somewhat overlong, as we spend too much time preparing for the trip, traveling across America and then in Africa, the Mediterranean and even Central Europe. However, once Mr. Verrill gets to India and begins traveling to Pakistan and working on the project in earnest the book becomes more focused. It's here too that the author gets a dismaying education in just how difficult folks can make it to do even a good deed. The best portions of the book actually come at Mr. Verrill's own expense as his can-do attitude bumps up against bureaucrats and regulations that say no-you-can't or, at least, not-so-fast. The book ends up being a tragicomic variation on The Quiet American and an enjoyable read even if not quite the one the author hoped to give us.

About the Author
Ralph "Jake" Warner,widely recognized as a pioneer of the do-it-yourself law movement, Warner founded Nolo with Ed Sherman in 1972. He began publishing do-it-yourself law books written by him and his colleagues after numerous publishers rejected them. Warner holds a law degree from Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley and an undergraduate degree from Princeton.

He and his wife, Carol, specialize in helping home buyers and sellers throughout the east bay. We actually got this book to help our friends who are looking to purchase a house themselves. Having already gone through the process we wish we had this book when we were in the market for buying a house. This book gives a good overview of the financial (budgeting, loans, government programs) and legal issues (contracts, etc...) regarding the sale of houses, as well decent pointers for working with real estate agents, finding a good neighborhood, and so on. The best part is that it does all of this in plain English. I highly recommend this book.

Great basic advice

You don't have to live in California to benefit from the advice in this book. It covers a lot of the basics that any homebuyer should know.

The purchase of a home is one of the most important of a person's lifetime. It pays to put in the research needed to get a good price and a good home. The way the topic is covered here is easy to understand and they offer links to several outstanding online resources.

My only complaint is that they did not give much coverage to so-called "short sales". In today's market a lot of sales fall under this category. I think a book like this should probably devote an entire chapter just to that topic.

Don't go house-hunting without it

Nolo is well known for its clearly written do-it-yourself guides to handling legal issues. I've used many Nolo products in the past and have always found them to be informative and practical. "How to Buy a House in California" is no exception.

Anybody who is planning to buy a house or condo as a primary residence will find this book to be an invaluable resource. The text is very comprehensive, with guidance in all of the important stages in purchasing residential property: planning, including prioritizing specific wants and needs; financing; working with real estate professionals and service providers; house hunting; negotiating; and taking care of closing and post-closing tasks. There is also a very useful appendix that discusses several aspects of living in California that may be unfamiliar to newcomers, including earthquakes, fires, droughts, and schools.

As with just about all Nolo publications, this book is organized in a very straightforward way and is written in a clear, clean style. Each chapter covers a broad topic, such as What Will You Offer?, Working With Real Estate Professionals, or If Something Goes Wrong During Escrow. After a brief introduction, the text explains the key principles underlying each topic and helps you figure out your rights, responsibilities, and strategy. A nice feature is that Nolo has sprinkled brief real-life case studies throughout the book to show how Nolo's advice can be put into practice.

The only significant omission is that there is very little discussion of all-cash offers. In the aftermath of the recent implosion of the real estate market, all-cash offers are becoming more common and deserve more extensive coverage than what is provided. It is also important to recognize that the book is not intended for those considering buying income properties or becoming real estate investors.

Bottom line: Nolo, as usual, has made a reliable, no frills-no hype guide that helps people navigate a complex activity. You won't find any infomercial-style pitches or dubious schemes here. If you're thinking about buying a house (or in the middle of the process even), " How to Buy a House in California " is an outstanding resource for doing everything the right way.

Indispensible guide if you are trying to raise money legally

This book is designed to help the average person trying to raise money for a good cause. As the subtitle says, the book deals with things like community fundraisers for schools or youth organizations - small scale fundraising. That's not to say this means only fundraisers aiming for a few hundred dollars - the sky is still the limit on how much anyone wants to raise for their cause. But the purpose of the book is to break down the process, step-by-step, for those who don't have access to a professional staff.

I've dabbled in fundraising before, both for individuals (i.e. raising money for people struck by tragedy, such as a devastating house fire or disabling accident) as well as third-party fundraising for an established non-profit organization. This book will come in extremely handy for any future fundraising. This guide walks you through the steps to determine what kind of fundraiser will work best for your cause. There is information about benefit dinners, auction events (both silent and live), concerts, fairs, and numerous other vehicles.

The legality of raising money is something that is cause for great concern. I know from experience that tax liabilities can easily scare people away from doing potentially very beneficial activities for worthy causes. While this book is not going to be a substitute for legal advice, it does provide some guidelines to help navigate those sometimes treacherous waters. For instance, many people do not realize that raffles are illegal many states. The book does not claim to provide comprehensive information - but it does point out that things such as raffles require research to find out how a given state's gaming commission views it (since it is a form of gambling).

The CD-ROM has handy forms such as donation procurement letters as well as thank you letters to donors. There are also auction bid sheets, press releases, applications for grants and other funding - basically enough to get the volunteer up and running with a community fundraiser.

It is published by Nolo, a publisher that prides itself on making the law accessible to everyone through quality books and resources. And Ilona Bray has authored a number of books for Nolo, including "Effective Fundraising for Nonprofits."

The book starts out with some basics on what your group can and can't do when raising money. Very good to consider to keep yourself and your group out of trouble. The second chapter focuses on volunteers and how to recruit, train, and keep volunteers with your organization or cause.

The third chapter will help you plan your group's fundraising strategy, which is a very good idea. A good plan will help you reach your goals. The next few chapters focus on various ways to raise money. These include: Sponsorships and other support from businesses, selling goods and services (new or used), requesting donations from individual members, event planning strategies, dinners and other food events, actions (live, silent, and online), fairs and festivals, benefit concerts and lectures, home and garden tours, and walkathons, contests, games, and sporting events.

All of these chapters contain tips, cautions, examples, and sample forms to assist you with your fundraising efforts. This guide really will make it easier for you and your group. The book is written in easy to understand language, and in a practical way. The book is meant to be used as you help your organization or group.

In addition to the text, the book has a CD-ROM included in the back with more resources. One resource is a bonus chapter "Applying for Grants From Foundations, Corporations, or Government." Also included on the CD-ROM are forms, spreadsheets, charts, overviews, and audio files to provide even more assistance to achieve your fundraising goals.

Bray has included insights and stories from a team of nonprofit experts that includes event planners, dedicated school parents, accountants, librarians, lawyers, and group leaders. If you are involved with any fundraising, this will be a handy reference to keep nearby. Combine it with "Effective Fundraising for Nonprofits" and you will have many ideas, strategies, and tips to raise money. All you'll need to do then is get out and implement them. Recommended for anyone who needs a guide on raising money legally and effectively.

nothing new here

Given that this book is entitled The Volunteers' Guide to Fundraising, I assumed that it would provide specific tips for volunteers involved in fundraising or for nonprofit employees working with volunteers. Unfortunately, that was not at all the case. The book is in no way specific to volunteers, and in fact, there are large sections of the book in which volunteers are not mentioned at all. Additionally, there are many volunteer-specific issues that are not even addressed here, such as how to give volunteers an aura of authority when dealing with the public. One of the few volunteer related issues that is covered is the number of volunteers requiredfor a given fundraising event, and I found these suggestions to be extraordinarily high, sometimes as high as 10 times the number of volunteers I have successfully used for similar events.

Having read Ilona Bray's other Nolo book: Effective Fundraising for Nonprofits, I was struck by the incredible amount of overlap between the two books. I felt somewhat cheated after reading The Volunteer's Guide to Fundraising, since it seemed to me that Bray simply regurgitated large parts of her earlier book's content into this one, including many of the real world examples. There is some new content present here, but certainly not enough to warrant the publication of an entirely new book. If you own Effective Fundraising for Nonprofits, I would urge you to skip this altogether. If you are trying to choose between the two, I'd again recommend Effective Fundraising for Nonprofits in most cases. Unless you are completely unfamiliar with how to recruit and screen volunteers, I would advise passing up The Volunteers' Guide to Fundraising. It has little that can't be found elsewhere, and other fundraising books cover a wider variety of topics.

Great Devotional

I've been trying to get back into the habit of daily devotions and this little gem is helping a bunch! Each chapter is poignant yet brief - easily a 10 minute read - and focuses on one aspect of how God works behind the scenes in our lives. Crossley has lots of experience (both academic and years and years of practical ministry) from which to draw, and his warm, quaint humor is refreshing in today's ironic, post-modern world.

About the Author
Franz Kafka was born to Jewish parents in Bohemia in 1883. Kafka s father was a luxury goods retailer who worked long hours and as a result never became close with his son. Kafka s relationship with his father greatly influenced his later writing and directly informed his Brief an den Vater (Letter to His Father). Kafka had a thorough education and was fluent in both German and Czech. As a young man, he was hired to work at an insurance company where he was quickly promoted despite his desire to devote his time to writing rather than insurance. Over the course of his life, Kafka wrote a great number of stories, letters, and essays, but burned the majority of his work before his death and requested that his friend Max Brod burn the rest. Brod, however, did not fulfill this request and published many of the works in the years following Kafka s death of tuberculosis in 1924. Thus, most of Kafka s works were published posthumously, and he did not live to see them recognized as some of the most important examples of literature of the twentieth century. Kafka s works are considered among the most significant pieces of existentialist writing, and he is remembered for his poignant depictions of internal conflicts with alienation and oppression. Some of Kafka s most famous works include The Metamorphosis, The Trial and The Castle.

Just What Every Landlord Needs

The only book on tax deductions just for landlords. This is important because the tax laws of the US are so complex that it takes a specialized book (written in plain English) to cover a specialized area like this. For instance, changes in the tax law in 1999 made it easier to take the home office deduction and harder for the IRS to successfully object. BUT the IRS doesn't go out of its way to encourage landlords to take the deduction. Indeed you won't find a single word about it in any IRS publication or form. In this book there is a chapter on just this subject, and it includes such details that as defining when travel from your home office to your rental property is or is not deductible.

This is the kind of detail that this book goes into. It is specific to landlords so eliminates all of the other material that is just in the way when you read it. It also includes access to a web site that updates this book with any changes in the law that affect the current edition of the book.

Basically this tells you all that you need to know, and it is almost guaranteed to let you find deductions you would otherwise have missed.

Absolutely Essential

I am a law student at Yale Law School and my husband is an attorney. We own and I manage about 5 rental properties. This book is absolutely essential for anyone owning a rental property. Do not depend on your accountant as a substitute as most accountants will not know this kind of detailed information about real estate rentals (unless they specialize in it or maybe have their own rentals.) My accountant who has been in practice over 20 years did not know a lot of essential stuff which I had to guide him through(it may be time for a new accountant). If I had not read this book I would have been doomed. Because I can qualify for the unlimited deduction (not just $25,000) for rental losses, we have literally saved tens of thousands of dollars in taxes we would have otherwise had to pay on my husband's salary, legally, with the guidance of this book. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is written in a very easy to understand format and gives you almost all the information you need in one place. You cannot rely on others to properly arrange your financial affairs in this specialized area. By reading this book you will know how to buy, finance, and repair properties in ways that produce the most effective tax benefits. Consider yourself lucky that you are aware this book is out there and purchase immediately if you own rentals.

Easy to read

I'm a beginner landlord and I found this book easy to read and comprehend. Tax books are not the most exciting of reading material, so I'm only 1/4 of the way through it, but I have learned so much from it so far. I bought the book at the end of the year to prepare myself for taxes. I wish I bought it sooner, because there is many deductions that I could have taken. But it's a little late in the year now and the reciepts were trashed, so I loose there. Great book for first timers and I will probably need to refer to this book as I move into the next tax year.

Ron is Vice President of Grace Association, a non-denominational network of churches, ministers, and ministries. < . > Additionally, Ron is an Adjunct Professor of World Religions, New Testament studies, and Hebrew Scriptures at Mesa Community College. Ron earned his B.A. degree from Ottawa University, his M.A. from Arizona State University, and his Doctor of Religious Studies from Golden State School of Theology. Ron has also completed additional doctoral studies in organizational leadership at Regent University and the University of Phoenix. Ron and his beloved wife Patty are parents of four daughters and have one granddaughter.
