About the Author
Ralph "Jake" Warner,widely recognized as a pioneer of the do-it-yourself law movement, Warner founded Nolo with Ed Sherman in 1972. He began publishing do-it-yourself law books written by him and his colleagues after numerous publishers rejected them. Warner holds a law degree from Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley and an undergraduate degree from Princeton.
Ira Serkes is a local Realtor with RE/MAX Real Estate (www.berkeleyhomes.com) and a Certified Residential Specialist. He and his wife, Carol, specialize in helping home buyers and sellers throughout the east bay. He is a founding member of The Institute for Luxury Home Marketing and author of Nolo's How to Buy a House in California and Get the Best Deal When Selling Your Home - San Francisco Bay Area Edition from Gabriel Publications. Serkes is also a graduate of Realtors Institute (GRI), a Certified Internet Real Estate Professional (e-Pro), a Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES) and one of only 4,000 U.S. an Accredited Buyer Representatives (ABR).
George Devine is a licensed real estate broker and a widely respected educator in the real estate field. He holds a B.A. from the University of San Francisco, and an M.A. from Marquette University, and has pursued additional studies at San Francisco State University, Seton Hall University, Fordham University, New York University, the University of California at Berkeley and other academic institutions. Currently, he teaches real estate at the McLaren School of Business at the University of San Francisco, where he was named the Outstanding Adjunct Professor. thorough

We actually got this book to help our friends who are looking to purchase a house themselves. Having already gone through the process we wish we had this book when we were in the market for buying a house. This book gives a good overview of the financial (budgeting, loans, government programs) and legal issues (contracts, etc...) regarding the sale of houses, as well decent pointers for working with real estate agents, finding a good neighborhood, and so on. The best part is that it does all of this in plain English. I highly recommend this book.

Great basic advice

You don't have to live in California to benefit from the advice in this book. It covers a lot of the basics that any homebuyer should know.
The purchase of a home is one of the most important of a person's lifetime. It pays to put in the research needed to get a good price and a good home. The way the topic is covered here is easy to understand and they offer links to several outstanding online resources.
My only complaint is that they did not give much coverage to so-called "short sales". In today's market a lot of sales fall under this category. I think a book like this should probably devote an entire chapter just to that topic.

Don't go house-hunting without it

Nolo is well known for its clearly written do-it-yourself guides to handling legal issues. I've used many Nolo products in the past and have always found them to be informative and practical. "How to Buy a House in California" is no exception.
Anybody who is planning to buy a house or condo as a primary residence will find this book to be an invaluable resource. The text is very comprehensive, with guidance in all of the important stages in purchasing residential property: planning, including prioritizing specific wants and needs; financing; working with real estate professionals and service providers; house hunting; negotiating; and taking care of closing and post-closing tasks. There is also a very useful appendix that discusses several aspects of living in California that may be unfamiliar to newcomers, including earthquakes, fires, droughts, and schools.
As with just about all Nolo publications, this book is organized in a very straightforward way and is written in a clear, clean style. Each chapter covers a broad topic, such as What Will You Offer?, Working With Real Estate Professionals, or If Something Goes Wrong During Escrow. After a brief introduction, the text explains the key principles underlying each topic and helps you figure out your rights, responsibilities, and strategy. A nice feature is that Nolo has sprinkled brief real-life case studies throughout the book to show how Nolo's advice can be put into practice.
The only significant omission is that there is very little discussion of all-cash offers. In the aftermath of the recent implosion of the real estate market, all-cash offers are becoming more common and deserve more extensive coverage than what is provided. It is also important to recognize that the book is not intended for those considering buying income properties or becoming real estate investors.
Bottom line: Nolo, as usual, has made a reliable, no frills-no hype guide that helps people navigate a complex activity. You won't find any infomercial-style pitches or dubious schemes here. If you're thinking about buying a house (or in the middle of the process even), " How to Buy a House in California " is an outstanding resource for doing everything the right way.
