While on the police department, she advanced herself by becoming an FBI Instructor, a Physical Fitness Certified Instructor, a Domestic Violence Instructor, a Sexual Harassment Instructor, a Firearms Instructor, Armorer Certified, and Defensive Tactics Instructor. Dianna has been honored for several community service awards, and has received numerous commendation letters from her supervisors for her commitment and dedication to serving the citizens of Shreveport, Louisiana.

This is literally just a glossary for commonly used words and phrases related to patent/copyright/trademark/trade secret stuff. There are four sections, 98% of which is definitions and the remaining few pages provide examples of what you submit. It's handy, I suppose, but is only worth its weight in how to be a dictionary.

It’s Been A Long Time Coming……
The Supreme Court Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage Nationwide

As a result of the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in the Obergefell v. Hodges case, same-sex marriage is now legal across the United States. Leading up to the Court’s June 2015 decision, many legal experts were predicting this result, which would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. The legal landscape for same-sex couples has certainly changed since the fight for marriage equality began.

In the first edition of A Legal Guide for Lesbian & Gay Couples – published 35 years ago – the authors focused primarily on anti-gay discrimination and the multiple areas of law where same-sex couples had no rights. The book dedicated a full chapter to a discussion of the majority of states that still criminalized same-sex relations. At the time, all states banned co-parent adoptions for same-sex couples, and the only discussion of marriage was a lengthy treatise on how best to resolve the conflicts that arise when lesbians or gay men try to end their opposite-sex marriages.

However, same-sex couples could obtain some legal protections through private contracts, such as a power of attorney, a will, or an agreement to co-own a home or share income. A Legal Guide for Lesbian & Gay Couples was written to help same-sex partners understand what legal options were available to help them protect their property and families.

More recently, the United States has experienced rapid legal change on the same-sex marriage front. While the change has been positive, it has, at times, created great legal uncertainty for same-sex couples across the nation. For example, we addressed how you could be married under state law, but treated as single for federal tax benefits, or how you could be married in one state, but barred from getting divorced in another.

Some years, it seemed as though we needed to publish monthly updates, not just annual ones. The patchwork of laws across the states created such a mess that I coined a phrase to describe the newest form of anti-gay oppression: “discrimination in the form of legal complexity.”

Thankfully, the uncertainty appears to be over – or at least almost so. With the uplifting ruling by Justice Kennedy overturning the marriage bans nationwide, lesbian and gay couples can marry in all 50 states (and D.C.). And, they can get divorced everywhere as well. All federal agencies will recognize all marriages for all purposes, no matter where a couple was married or where they choose to live. In one refreshing sweep of constitutional adjudication, all those nasty Defense of Marriage Acts have been relegated to where they belong – the legal dustbin.

No doubt there will be some lingering problems. A few states haven’t fully implemented the marriage equality ruling, and there’s no federal recognition of civil unions or domestic partnership registrations. Parentage rights remain uncertain in many states, and our messy legal history has left many couples with confusing situations, most of which only arise only upon divorce or death. Transgender folks still face a plethora of legal discrimination, and the issues of religious freedom will continue to affect how same-sex couples are treated.

So, for now, there are plenty of important topics to cover in our books, but our job – and the burden on our readers – has definitely gotten lighter.

I sense an adventure beyond my dreams is about to unfold and I feel a knot of anticipation tighten in my stomach. Turning to one of the girls I ask, "Who is our Lady?"

She smiles and answers, "Why Artemis, of course."

I ask, "Artemis?" She laughs gently, and strokes my hair, saying, "Yes, Artemis, the Great Goddess of the Moon and the Hunt. She is our Protectress. She reveres little girls. Surely you knew that." Actually, I don’t know, but don’t dare admit my ignorance.

I stare at my torchlight wondering where this night walk is leading me. The wooden post of the torch is carved ornately with insets of highly polished metal, like brass. The etchings seem familiar, enticing me to recall an ancient time I perhaps, once knew. The passions invoked by faint memories of lives long past press along the edges of my mind, swirling my thoughts into remembrances so subtle they feel like a hazy mist clouding my consciousness.

My hand grasps the varnished wooden handle that is just wide enough for my small hand to encircle. The handhold is smooth from wear. I sense many hands have held this torch before mine, and I am honored by the history and magic encapsulated in this light bearing implement. Transfixed by the blaze of torchlight, I wonder what is all means. Why am I on my way to meet with Artemis? That deep eternal voice within reassures me again, stating it is part of my destiny, and to simply let it unfold.

Gliding through the forest, my feet barely touch the ground. The night shadows dance in our torch light, and soon we approach a ring of radiant light illuminating a large circle of young girls all dressed in white with wreathes of laurel encircling their heads. I scan their faces absorbing their air of adulation as they focus on the Great Lady standing at the foot of a massive tree in the center of the circle. This must be the Moon Tree I muse, while gazing at its smooth silver bark whose luster appears to extend to the leaves fluttering in the night breeze. The tree reminds me of the mighty Beech trees I love to climb in my forest back home. A regal stag looms over Artemis’ right shoulder, withdrawing briefly like a mirage behind the silver bark of the tree and then resuming his place at her side, standing guard of the Great Lady.

The mammoth tree pales in significance to the face of the Great Lady. The pressure of gentle hands on my shoulders coax me to step forward and keep walking as they guide me into the center of the circle. I’m soon standing a few feet from the Great Goddess. Her golden curls spilling out of a loose bun frame her face, softening her perfectly appointed Greek facial features. She wears a short white hunting tunic trimmed in gold, and holds a silver bow in one hand with a quiver of arrows slung over her shoulder. In her other hand blazes a torch three times the size of those we girls carry. A garland of star shaped flowers forms a wreath around her head. Above the ring of flowers arises a crescent shaped moon lying on its back with its tips emerging like the horns of a bull, crowning her head with a brilliant halo.

She says, "I am Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt and Goddess of the Moon. I watch over women through the cycles of life and I’m Protectress of the Child. With your mother I was at the moment of your birth. It was I who midwifed your spirit onto the Earth plane. Tonight marks an important rite of passage for you. You see, we are keeping an appointment made on the day of your birth."

Looking deeply into her eyes, I watch Artemis’ face dissolve into the face of my mother. Then Nana’s face emerges as Mom’s fades, and in turn Nana melts into the face of her mother. Then face after face comes forth as the previous one recedes; a multitude of women's faces appear before me and even though their countenances are unfamiliar, they feel so alive within me. The faces come and go as I travel back in time through the lineage of mothers who bore daughters who became mothers of daughters down through the ages. The rate of speed increases to a point where I cannot keep up, and finally the pace overtakes me as history marches backward before my eyes. The images spin into a ball of light and explode like fireworks filling my inner sight with an eruption of beautiful rainbow light.

Tough subject handled well - typical NOLO "must have"

Typical for a Nolo book, you get a well organized, more-than-a-layperson and less-than-a-lawyer view of the relevant issues. This is a review of the second edition of this book, published two years after the first, which includes an additional 20 pages. It starts with a general overview of why you might need such policies in the first place. The rest of the book coherently carves out the role of specific technologies in the workplace including e-mail, camera phones, and company social media sites. Chapter 7, "Company-sponsored Social Media," was extremely relevant as my organization has just established a Facebook site. This chapter is now must reading by our Facebook committee members.

All chapters include an overview of the specific technology, and its general and unique issues. This is followed by extended discussion with numerous examples. A sample policy is always listed at the end of each chapter. In my organization's case, most of the policies would be overkill. However, it's far easier to remove provisions you don't need, than to add ones you don't know exist. All of the sample policies are included on a CD-ROM and make excellent leaping off points for developing your own documents. Policies on the CD-ROM are in rich text format (rtf).

The chapters are liberally sprinkled with "Lessons from the Real World," examples of actual legal action relevant to a specific technology. For example, in Chapter 7 one can read about "Defamation in 140 Characters or Less" (page 144) where we are regaled with what the author claims may be "the first Twitter lawsuit." Courtney Love was served with legal papers for calling fashion designer Dawn Simorangkir "a prostitute, drug addict, and 'nasty lying hosebag thief.' " Indeed.

Copies of this book should probably go to the CEO, CIO, and head of HR. Also good for general reference collections in libraries.

This is a really tough subject area handled really well. Due to the ongoing changes in all things internetty I would expect to have to regularly buy new editions, or avail myself of the free legal updates posted at Nolo.com.

Very helpful for the businessperson who wants to be protected

Most small and medium sized business owners can't afford adequate legal representation on a day-to-day basis. On the other hand, all businesses have intellectual property (IP) and other assets they would prefer to protect. By nature, business owners also want to protect themselves from liabilities that have the potential of destroying their business and perhaps even personal wealth.

Add to this the fact that most smaller businesses are under-insured and the legal environment and you have the makings of potential disaster on several fronts. Things like an employee using a bootleg copy of a software program can land you in big, expensive trouble.

For $20, "Smart Policies for Workplace Technology: Email, Blogs, Cell Phones & More" gives the small and medium sized business owner a leg up.

There is a need in every business to have your employees feel as if they are trusted - the key is to trust enough, but not too much. Self-protection is the key.

Author Lisa Guerin is an attorney and she knows her stuff. (I can offer a kind of informed opinion here because many of the projects I work on are related to employment law and intellectual property - the very things discussed in this book.)

Much to her credit, Guerin describes the issues in easy-to-understand language.

She begins by explaining why businesses need policies governing the use of the company's technology. (To a large extent, the advice is applicable to any organization. In order to keep my language simple, I will simply use business or businesses.) Most importantly, she emphasizes not only that businesses need policies, but that employees must sign a statement that they understand and agree to abide by them.

Guerin does a good job, in my estimation, of explaining the dangers businesses face as a result of misuse of business technology by employees. She covers computers and software, email, internet use, instant messaging, blogging, cell phones, portable computing devices, cameras and camera phones.

Each chapter contains some solid "scary" examples of what can happen when you don't have policies in place - and some encouraging cases showing the results of smart management. Guerin is convincing.

Her explanations are clearer than I would have expected and either she has done her research well or has a competent staff.

From my own experience, I believe owners and managers of small to medium sized businesses would greatly benefit from not only reading this book, but following its advice. (There's a CD filled with sample forms to help the reader along.) I have been involved in a number of projects where departing employees helped themselves to customer lists and other proprietary information; an instance where an employee used his cell phone camera to photograph top-secret designs; and where misuse of company computers put the business in legal jeopardy.

It's a cruel world out there. Employees can harm their employers, intentionally or otherwise. Lots of lawyers make good livings suing companies - and increasingly they know how to use people like me to find evidence in the information technology infrastructure.

Overall, this is a book every employer should read and heed.

Easy to read volume for HR Directors and Small Business owners

While I usually review CDs and DVDs as well as entertainment related books here on Amazon, I do work in management in a office environment and so this book was of interest to me.

It is another in the fine line of legal books - written in plain English - by Nolo Press. I've been reading their books for more than 30 years.

This particular volume is the 2nd Edition. The original was published in 2009 and this is the 2011 version. It's not clear what parts have been updated or revised. Many of the surveys mentioned took place on 2009 or earlier. But if you don't have the first edition, this info will be all new to you.

The author - an attorney with lots of employment law experience, makes you feel at ease as a reader, right from the start. But she also gives you cause for concern as she discusses formal policies for PC use, cell phone use and personal email abuse. As you learn by reading the sections marked "Lessons from the real world" placed throughout the book, lawsuits abound.

The book is probably of most use by HR directors or owners of small companies. At just over 200 pages with large type and plenty of white space the book can be read from beginning to end in one or two sittings. It comes with a handy CD-ROM (inside back cover) that contains lots of sample forms.

I would certainly recommend it to the individuals I noted above. It's - as I said - an eady read and it could easily save you from a possible lawsuit.

Denis Clifford, a graduate of Columbia Law School, where he was an editor of The Law Review, is a lawyer who specializes in estate planning. He is the author of many Nolo titles including Quick and Legal Will Book and Make Your Own Living Trust and co-author of Plan Your Estate and A Legal Guide for Lesbian and Gay Couples. He has been interviewed by such major media as The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Money Magazine.

Nice outline good for concepts and vocabulary

I classify NOLO's legal books in two broad categories: broad and shallow vs. narrow and deep. Purchasers of this book, as its title should indicate, will get a broad and shallow, "basic" introduction to estate planning. I don't hesitate to recommend this book to someone starting out in total ignorance who is thinking about estate planning. However, this book is not designed, nor is it intended, to allow someone to establish a well ordered estate. It is more of a broad outline useful for establishing relevant concepts and vocabulary. To properly set up your estate, you'll either need to consult with a professional in the field, and/or purchase some of NOLO's other "narrow and deep" works on related subjects (e.g., 8 Ways to Avoid Probate). I think that after reading this work, someone wishing to consult with a professional should be able to converse with some clarity as to what is desired.

This fairly slim book (well, around 200 pages is slim for me, especially considering the topic) is organized clearly and written in a straight forward manner. The single brief appendix, gives six, fairly short examples of estate plans. These plans tie things together and are nice leaping off points for exploring more specific goals (again, by consulting with a professional or via further research). This is a useful work, but don't consider it a stand-alone reference. This book really is about "estate planning BASICS."
