Great reference for any business owner

I have an earlier version of this book and absolutely swear by it. I turned to this book originally because the attorney I hired to write the contracts did a terrible job understanding what we wanted. I ended up selling my business using the contract templates included in the book as well as many of the checklists.

I'm not a lawyer and I easily understood everything that went into our contracts. In fact, the buyers of our business were impressed that we did all the paperwork ourselves and their attorney approved all of the contracts. Personally, I don't think I would ever take the "DIY" route again - but I know what it takes now!

I don't recommend selling (or buying) a business without an attorney or CPA. However, read this book first and you will have a much more informed conversation about what you do and don't want in your contracts when you do go to your attorney and CPA. Use the information from this book to help you interview and hire the right professionals to assist you.

I keep this book on my shelf as a great reference and have recommended it to many clients. I refer to this occasionally when a client needs to design their exit strategy.

The price of this book is well worth it. Consider it the pre-requisite education you need before spending hundreds (or thousands!) of dollars being educated by a lawyer!

Excellent Nuts and Bolts Guide

This is an excellent nuts and bolts, basic guide for selling a small company. Fred does a solid job of walking through the basics. The book is geared more towards the "technical" aspects of selling a business - ie contracts, forms, etc etc. Overall, good back ground book.

Truly Inspirational

Until the Cows Come Home is an inspiring account of a life that most of us will never have to experience firsthand. Perhaps this is our loss. Considering the many roadblocks that have been thrown in his path, J.T. Blakemore's highest achievement may be that he is one of the most positive, enthusiastic men you will ever meet.

At first glance J.T. seems like an average guy who loves his family, occasionally does volunteer work, and knows the value of a good education. He is a religious man, a homeowner, loves to write, and is a consummate story teller. But his experiences, starting with his years in an orphanage, have been far from average.

We have all known adversity. What sets J.T. apart from the rest of us is a warm summer night in 1963 and an ill-advised ride in a '59 Hot Rod Chevy. He regained consciousness 28 days later. He was twenty-one years old.

"You might say I threw my life away for a dozen cans of beer. My bell was rung really well, and I've had one gigantic hangover ever since. The prognosis was simple: brain damage. The effects were not so simple. Not by a long shot."

Before this, his biggest problem had been a knee injury that was interfering with his dreams of major league baseball and an extended military career. That soon became the least of his worries. Instead, his sole focus became beating the odds--learning to walk, talk, see, and recover some semblance of his former life.

"I had to learn how to do everything all over again. Buttons were one big pain in the butt. Shoelaces were out of the question. I'm sure that if loafers had not already been in existence I would have invented them. My mind was willing to do anything I had to do, but I seemed to be in some strange disconnect mode most of the time.

"Damage to my big USMC pride would be an ongoing occurrence. When it comes to landing on one's butt, for example, I have a great deal of insight. On more than one occasion I have found myself, without any apparent reason, sitting squarely on my posterior. But I have learned two positive things about falling. First: getting back on my feet has become easier with every fall I have experienced. Second: living with embarrassment won't kill you."

In spite of J.T.'s never-ending recovery from his traumatic brain injury and later setbacks, including four types of cancer (one of which required the removal of a "not-so-small piece" of his "favorite shoulder"), J.T. refused to give up on life. Closing one eye while reading textbooks in order to compensate for his double vision, he went on to earn several college degrees. He also met and married his wife and raised two children.

J.T. strongly believes that education and faith are the keys to overcoming all adversity. His belief in "patient, prayerful, persistent perseverance" and an unflappable faith in God have served him well during his unusual journey.

"I have had to learn to accept the fact that everything is constantly changing, and, in many cases, remains different and difficult. That almost sounds normal, doesn't it?"

J.T. Blakemore, who at the age of sixty-one is on the threshold of a promising writing career, is truly an inspiration to anyone who attempts to triumph over adversity.

This is a great book that supplies some templates for your business which may need an ePolicy handbook for proper use of all of your company's electronic devices such as cell phones, tablets, laptop computers and tower computers. I highly recommend it for non-profit organizations where I had used it for a local non-profit in Grand Rapids, MI.

This is THE book to have when you're loved one dies!

It hard enough when your parent unexpectedly dies and you discover you are the executor of the estate. There are so many questions and so little time. This book is a godsend. It covers everything you need to know from the moment your loved one passes. It describes step by step, in plain english fashion, what needs to be done in the first week, the first month, and in the future. Everything from death certificates, to funeral arrangements, to claiming life insurance, and, of course, dealing with the estate. It's all in this book. It is your one-stop resource for unbiased, easy to understand, how-to information. This is THE book to have even if you are not an executor. It will help your entire family. It answers so many questions and takes the mystery out of settling an estate. It's like having an estate attorney in the family. It has helped my family tremendously.

Books from Nolo Press have always been easy to understand and use. This book is no exception and contiunes their fine tradition of making legal processes accessible to ordinary folks like you and me.

An excellent guide for those of us struggling to manipulate the legal maze of probate. After having read the book, I was able to avoid asking as many questions of an attorney resulting in savings to the estate of hundreds of dollars. More importantly, I was able to deal with heirs and family members in a fair and intelligent manner. No one has been able to complain of things not being explained clearly or of the process moving too slowly. I would recommend the book to anyone who is about to administer an estate.It is a great tool for an heir or family member who simply wants to be better informed.

Provides A Good Starting Point, But Could Do More

This book does a fine job of providing a basic overview of all steps of the probate process and for settling a trust. It is well organized, easy to read, and provides good sources of additional information.

However, it does not provide advice on how to handle semi-complex situations that often arise during probate or while managing a trust. While very complex questions of law should be left to professionals and not hastily discussed in a do-it-yourself book, some treatment should have been give to such things as how to deal with banks and other holders of property who do not recognize the authority of the trustee or executor or what to do to settle disputes with an attorney-in-fact under a durable power of attorney or between co-trustees.

I purchased this book because I was looking for a good guide for a trustee who was managing a living trust for a trustor who was declared incompetent. This is an increasingly common situation and the book completely ignores it, instead only discussing trusts in the context settling the trust or a deceased trustor-- as the title of the book suggests.

This book is great starting point, but if the estate or trust you are settling is not perfectly planned and drafted, you will likely still need the help of a professional.

Despite the shortcomings, I am yet to find a better guide. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could.

Okay, if you have the NOLO Start-up or Small Business...don't bother

I'll start off by saying I love NOLO, I own a good 15+ books on all types of topics. I got hooked about 7 years ago at the old Stacy's bookstore in San Francisco, they had a whole NOLO section (NOLO is a Berkley Company) and they are fabulous. As a woman and a small business owner I was curious about the insights this would offer.
I own the Small Business and Legal Forms for Starting and Running a Small Business--this book, while written by women and definitely has a more female-focus, added little to the other Small Business books.

Pros
Clean, clear and concise
If you are new to the business environment or have been out for awhile, fabulous information
If you are transitioning into a working mom, some great suggestions
Good advertising ideas
Explains the tax code in-depth and things to help set yourself up, if you have no idea, great explanation

Cons
If you understand a bit about small businesses, this isn't detailed enough
Forums, while fun to read are more ancedotal than informative
If you're looking for some women's small business organizations, look elsewhere
Definitely geared to more retail businesses

I guess I was looking for some more meat and less bones, so this was a bit disappointing. Ff you know little about running a small business/wanting to get back into a career, very helpful.

Jeremey Gingrich was born in Germany and has livedin many exotic locales since. He's hung his hat in Spain, New Jersey, Virginia,and Canton, Georgia, just to name a few. His family is scattered all about thecountry as well, with roots in Kentucky, Texas and California. Gingrich spenthis college years at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springsand acted as Assistant Coach for their Division 1 College Basketball teamfollowing graduation. He is currently an officer in the Air Force, living inColumbia, South Carolina. Jeremey continues to write numerous plays, and theoccasional novel, and he is active in community theatre, with acting credits atColumbia's Town Theatre and Workshop Theatre.

Needing. Wanting. Loving. Taking.

This may be the best book I have read in 23 years of living on this planet. The detail of the love scene with the pickled ham and the purple cheetah was prehaps the best use of allegory and foreshadowing to be put down on parchment. If you are single, and want to date a genuine playwrite and gentleman of the arts, please track down Mr. Ginrich and devour him. I know I will.

Reality of men's behavior, all women must face

This book is so well written. The characters are somewhat pathetic, they do act in the stereotypical male behavior. I can't help hope that some men do grow up and repress this behavior. It is refreshing to know that most men think and act this way at some time in their lives....not just the schmucks I meet.

Gingrich Does It Again!!!!

This book is great. It really depicts the male mind at it's most extreme. Everyone needs to read this ASAP. I have a signed copy in a sealed glass case so it will last forever. It's just that good. God, I'm almost crying right now thinking about this one scene where a mongoose walks into a room with a pizza on his shoulder and...well, I don't want to ruin it for you. Go out and buy this now!

A great first book

Look, this is a general book. It will properly walk you through the big picture of what you need to do to set up a business, at least from a legal and contractual basis. That is rather important. By its nature, however, it isn't specific. This book is applicable whether you are starting up a software firm or a gardening supply store. Because of that, however, it obviously lacks specificity. It is general, it is useful, and I would think it should be the first book you read if you are interested in starting your own business. But it shouldn't be the last.

The different sections of each chapter would be easier to read and grasp if more of a bullet type format was used. I found myself reading and re-reading sections to get all of the information I was looking for. I would look elsewhere if you want to obtain information without having to take a course in business.

Covered All The Bases...And More

I bought this book thru Amazon in June 2006 because of my experiences working with a close friend who had just lost his father rather unexpectedly. My friend faced a monstrous task of trying to track down his father's assets, business records, last will, credit accounts, etc. just to scratch the surface. As a participant in his frustration, I began to think about the arrangement of my personal life and how my loved ones would tend to my estate.

"Get It Together" brings so much to the table to deal with. I think most people refuse to face their mortality and the task of making such arrangements, let alone there really is a large volume of papers, decisions, conversations, and organization to be handled. GIT is very thorough in all topic areas (see Table of Contents). The book discusses the emotions involved with each topic area, numerous websites to obtain additional information, what to get a copy of, keeping the info current and arranging your "estate" or life, for that matter, to benefit those close to you.

My parents or other people I look up to would never or be highly uncomfortable discussing these topics in detail. This book is perfect to compensate for the lack of those conversations. Now, just a warning for those willing to purchase and conform to this book. I was quite diligent in following all their instructions and recommendations to the "t". It took longer than expected, about 12 weekends, until I had gathered and organized everything to my satisfaction and I don't have a wife, kids or other complicated situations...just me alone.

But I have such a peace of mind that my successors will have no trouble making decisions or tracking down stuff because it's all there with explicit directions from me. I find going forward that I try to keep my life organized in a simple fashion and refuse to take on unnecessary stuff that I will need to add to my planner. And I feel no stress at all looking at my desk now because all the meaningless clutter is gone and GIT was a big reason for that.

Finally, the greatest resource is the forms CD included with the book, which saves a great deal of time when the organizing process starts and got me unstuck in some areas.

My mother died suddenly and left her estate in a total mess. I was left shocked, grief-stricken and alone in struggling to make sense of what needed to be done. I wouldn't wish that ordeal on anyone let alone on those I love. This workbook and companion organizer is the perfect solution. Nothing will be left to guesswork if I am incapacitated or dead. It is thorough yet simply organized and written from a compassionate perspective. It is a gift of love to provide this kind of direction to those who must make decisions on your behalf.

Melanie Cullen has approached a very difficult topic with insight and compassion. Starting with the Letter to Loved Ones, Health Care Directives, Funeral and Memorial Services, through various chapters on the disposition of assets - including Pets and Livestock - she offers helpful guidance in a straightforward, friendly manner. Whether you already have everything together or haven't a clue where to start, "Get It Together: Organize Your Records So Your Family Won't Have To" is an excellent guide that will make it easier for your loved ones to help in the event that you are incapacitated, or to manage your estate when you are gone. The forms in the book and on the CD can be easily organized and updated in the companion Planner. A must read for everyone!
