Review
A compelling piece of historical crime scene investigation. Insightful and new! -- L.T. R. Literary Review
From the Publisher
Just the facts Jack! A must read for anyone with a serious interest in Jack the Ripper. We know him by many names: Jack from Hell; Spring-heeled Jack; Red Jack; Saucy Jack. A horrific series of sex-lust murders and mutiliations in the autumn of 1888 within the fog shrouded alleys and courtyards of Whitechapel. Official police files were mysteriously closed until 1992. Why the secrecy? Leaving behing the ghastly remains of prostitute Mary Kelly, the Ripper quietly slipped awat into the pages of history, only to become the most thoroughly baffling and intriguing predator in human form known throughout the world in our modern times.
From the Author
Why was this book written? As any Ripperologist will tell you, there are so many conspirary theories abounding as to the identity of Jack, facts have been lost in the shuffle. Yet, facts do exist that will tell us a great deal about the killer. We know where he killed, how he killed, and his victims tell us a great deal about his motivation and deviant pathologies. Some of the most important clues have never been examined. Was the kidney, sent to the police, actually from one of the victims? Modern science can be used to put such pieces of the puzzle into place. Throughout this book, interesting clues come into fresh light and are re-visited in order to determine the probable guilt or innocence of the many suspects.

A Poor Effort by an Author Who Should Know Better
By wrbtu
The author, Dr. David J. Speare, is a veterinary pathologist. I would assume that along the way to getting his advanced degree, Dr. Speare was called upon at some point to present research papers and a thesis. The requirements for such documents include bibliographies, citations, footnotes, references, etc. It's a shame that Dr. Speare, who should know better, has applied none of these techniques to his book on Jack the Ripper. He freely paraphrases other author's works, but rarely cites from where the references came. There is no bibliography, which is very strange for a book which relies so heavily on the use of other author's research & publications. It is difficult from reading the text to see where Dr. Speare's own ideas begin, and where other author's ideas end. That's too bad, because Dr. Speare does seem to have some interesting and possibly original thoughts here, especially concerning his stated area of expertise (pathology). His discussion of the Lusk Letter (and attachment) would be worth a lot more to the reader if Dr. Speare hadn't messed up the foundation of his discussion by telling the reader that a person who was actually a police supervisor was a doctor(!). Apparently Dr. Speare had read some of the policeman's comments on biology, & took them to be coming from a doctor rather than from a layman. If Dr. Speare got this rather obvious (and well documented) fact wrong, what else did he get wrong? The factual errors in this book are too numerous to count. Many of the author's hypotheses have been earlier refuted by far greater experts on Jack the Ripper than Dr. Speare. As other reviewers have noted on this website, the great quantity of typographical errors make the book difficult to follow at times. Dr. Speare's discussion of suspects seems at once to be going somewhere, but ends up going nowhere. To knowledgeable readers in the area of Jack the Ripper research, some of Dr. Speare's conclusions and misinterpretations seem almost comical. To beginning readers in this area, please avoid this book, & instead buy a book which will present you with more facts than typographical errors. To start, I would recommend books by Sugden, Fido, Eddleston, and/or Begg.

Interesting, but......
By WFS
Here's a novel idea: If you are going to write a book, GET AN EDITOR!!!!!! This book is filled with inaccuracies, both spelling and factual, which make it very hard to take seriously. Example: An entire chapter is written on suspect George Chapman. No problem here, except the author claims Chapman was the second suspect cited by the MacNaughten Memoranda. He completely omits the person MacNaughten actually cited, Michael Ostrog. To the author's credit, Chapman should be considered more of a serious suspect than Ostrog anyway. Nevertheless, the inaccuracies are hard to overlook. He repeats "facts" stated in other books that have been long proven false, and misspells them while doing so. There are much better books on the market.

Avoid this book
By D. Norder
If you're searching through the Ripper books listed for sale here, you may see this rate fairly highly. Don't trust it for a second. The book is hopelessly amateurish and riddled with errors. The only reason it looks rated so well is that more than half of the current reviews are all suspiciously by an anonymous person from Geneva Switzerland, who is, no doubt, the same person leaving multiple reviews. Avoid this book (and the even worse Ripper books by Knight, Cornwell, Harrison and so forth) and get something by Evans, Begg, Sugden, Harris, Fido or Rumbelow instead.
