Nice Overview Of Estate Planning
By scesq
This is a nice overview of what to do when planning your estate. It does a nice job of covering the many topic areas and taking the mystery out of them. This book references a number of other Nolo Press books that can help with the specifics of estate planning. While a person could create a will based on this book I would look to other Nolo products or check with an attorney.
The back of this book states, "The information you need in plain English." That seems to me to be the purpose of this book. This is a great way to understand estate planning without being overwhelmed by all the possibilities or getting caught up in legal jargon. This book lists seventeen other Nolo Press resources that address estate topics in more detail as well as letting the reader know there is free legal information on the Nolo Press website.
This book is broken up into 13 chapters. The book begins by helping the reader evaluate his or her personal situation. Based on this evaluation the following chapters cover topics related to beneficiaries, trusts, ways to avoid probate, estate tax and other estate issues. One chapter looks at planning for incapacity and another looks at whether a layer is necessary to help with estate planning. In fact, there are occasions where the book suggests consulting a lawyer such as if you think the will might be contested or when creating certain trusts.
My one issue with this book is that Nolo Press has a book called "Plan Your Estate" which is twice as large and much more complex. "Estate Planning Basics" is an overview while "Plan Your Estate" goes into much more detail. I guess this is good for people who want an overview but if people want to do more, "Plan Your Estate" is the next step so it may be best to get the more complex book instead of the book that is an overview.
This is a nice overview of what estate planning is all about. While it takes the mystery out of estate planning it is entitled "Estate Planning Basics" for a reason.

Indispensable for planing estate
By Eugene Tenenbaum Reluctant Reader
The ISBN 1413319254 (Estate Planning Basics, 7th ed.) is a black and white textbook that contains all the legal basics you need to know to legally plan estate, and it is written in plain English. Its only 227 pages are clearly divided into 13 chapters and very short topics. The book ends with an additional chapter of examples. The topics are divided into short paragraphs, and contain highlights and summaries giving the book the properties of a handbook as well as of a reference.
So, after the initial reading it can be used for just browsing of only the important points. All the legal information is supported by practical advice and clear examples. Included are step-by-step instructions to write basic documents quickly and safely. The book provides recent changes in the law. Approx. 53 pages of the book are shown by the Amazon.com's "LOOK INSIDE!" function. What cannot be seen is that the book the book is very well printed on semi-glossy paper, and the not too flimsy soft covers are adequate considering the price.

Motivated me to begin estate planning without fear
By Kcorn
Even the thought of estate planning has often intimidated me. I'd felt better after reading a previous NOLO book on the subject and this updated book boosts my confidence even more - especially since it includes a dedicated website which contains updates, blogs, podcasts, and videos. Since estate planning laws can change quickly, it is very reassuring to have access to this the additional info, including the most current news. It is frustrating to buy a book only to find much of the material out of date within the year.
It would be impossible to list all the details in this book so I'll just focus on the highlights that were not only of interest to me but might also appeal to potential readers. I also want to add that the author of this book wisely realizes that no one book can cover every single detail of estate planning and doesn't hesitate to note when readers might want to go beyond the text and consult a lawyer.
The first chapter focuses on such important areas as evaluating individual needs and situations (children from previous relationships, beneficiaries with special needs, leaving money to charities), understanding what property is actually owned, etc. While this section is written with clear language and does indeed cover the basics, there were some topics I hadn't considered. For instance, I hadn't really thought about my "digital legacy", including blogs, email accounts, photos, social networking identities, and more. But once the subject was raised, it became clear that online accounts can be considered a type of property. I realized it was vital for an estate executor to understand my requests about this online information.
Even though this is described as a "basics" book, I felt that the material went well beyond what I'd consider introductory. There were examples of some very complex situations: handling blended families, estate planning for same sex or unmarried couples, shared gifts, etc. There were also important reminders about where to store estate planning documents as well as when to revise them. Situations change and when a child is adopted or a divorced person remarries that is the time to revisit an estate plan. This may seem like common sense but I'd had a major life change and reading this book reminded me that I needed to update my plan.
Those who find additional benefits from reading real life scenarios should find the Appendix particularly appealing. It presents 6 common scenarios of various individuals and couples who may be finalizing estate plans: a couple in their late 50s, a single mother, a young married couple, a single man, a couple in their second marriage, and a prosperous older couple. Readers can then learn about typical goals and plans for each situation. This adds a lively perspective to the book.
This review is only a bare bones description of some of the material in this book. I want to add that this is among the best I've found when it comes to not only a basic overview of estate planning but understanding the options - from the very beginning (understanding terms) to the final details (revising and storing wills). Along the way, I guarantee that those new to the topic will find some surprising information that they hadn't previously considered. Highly recommended.
