3.5 Stars: A Slight Improvement on Version 7 of Another 'Signature' Nolo Product

I bought the 7th edition of this publication and rated it 3 stars. While that and this are adequate publications, I still believe that, for the money, a lot more theoretical stuff should be thrown in. Otherwise, one can get everything in this book using a web browser and taking a little bit of time for self-research.
This publication and another one from NOLO about running an LLC should be combined under one title.
This book is typical of what NOLO has become, to wit, a cash machine. This is now done by churning out marginally helpful texts such as this, using NOLO's good reputation for marketing, and selling them for a pretty penny.
I wonder if the organization has wandered from its roots. I can't beat this book up because it does help one do what it states it is going to do, I just puzzle over the decision to make and market the book with such a hefty price tag.
Oh, the major improvement this book has over the immediately previous edition (7) is that it no longer comes with a CD ROM.

Good guide and overview but not a complete guide

The problem with these books is that there are so many of them by the same author about the same subject. So, which one do you choose? These are the books available (and these are just the ones with LLC in the title):

So, which one do you choose when they all look so similar? They each cover one specific step, forcing you to get the other guide, and then the other, and let's not forget Deduct It!: Lower Your Small Business Taxes and other similar ones. Honestly, you can choose any of them to get a brief overview and then I suggest you get an attorney. You will save time, money and future headaches by doing that and getting proper and complete advice. Because, that is the problem with these guides, they are rather incomplete. I have all 4 of them and I still don't feel as though they provide a semi-complete overview about an LLC.
This book gives you good information and it is easy to read and understand. But, there are so many State specific intricacies that make this book incomplete. The way you file your paperwork matters and no one size fits all. Actually, you are better off going to your State's website and looking at the required paperwork and the guides there. This is a good guide and it would give you a good education before meeting with your attorney.
As a disclaimer, I am an attorney and one of my specialties is business formation.

A good book, but you may not really need it.

I'm in the process of setting up my photography business as an LLC for the little added bit of liability protection an LLC offers over a sole proprietorship. Before looking into it, I didn't really know what was involved. My wife had been involved in establishing a non-profit and found this author's nonprofit book to be quite helpful, so I was looking forward to all of the great assistance this one would offer.
It turns out, setting up an LLC is really easy (at least in my state). It takes about 15 minutes online on the state's business website. That's it. Just one quick form, seventy bucks (in Utah; every state's fee varies), and you've got an LLC. A book like this one isn't really required to set up an LLC. If you're not expecting a complicated business structure (like, if you're just setting up a one-person business like I am), you can probably do without this book. Anything more complicated (multiple members, a manager-managed LLC, etc), and this book does offer some good advice (especially regarding drafting an operating agreement). Granted, this book does offer a few helpful suggestions even for the simplest LLC businesses, but I found it just isn't necessary.
If you do want to look it over, get it from your local library. It's not a very long book, you can probably get through what you need in a day, and may not find yourself going back to it once you've got your LLC established. The author does have a "follow-up" book, Your Limited Liability Company, which goes over the official legal details of running the business after it's established (record-keeping, meetings, taxes, etc). I'm guessing that one is similar: useful if you've got a complex LLC, but not that mandatory if it's fairly simple and you're willing to do a quick web search if and when you do have a question.
Anyway, if you want to burn the cash, go for it. It's not a bad book, and certainly beats paying someone else to establish an LLC for you. But once you find out how easy it really is to get an LLC started, you may regret shelling out the cash for a book you may never need again.
