Straight talk from the pew

Changing Churches: A View From the Pew This book is shares a personal journey, including a return to faith and a love for God and for his people in particular congregations. I found it not preachy, but sincere and direct. The author examines the motivations for leaving one church and joining another, and explores the personal impacts on people who take "church" seriously and value the friendships established there. She also critiques the ways that churches have changed and are changing, and presents factors that facilitate a "good" church. I especially appreciated Chapter Eight, the responsibilities of the church member; all too often the man or woman in the pew is a spectator and a critic, rather than a healer and builder. I also appreciated Chapter Nine, which focuses on the shepherding role of church leaders, reminding us that they are doubly accountable to God. All in all, this is a practical and balanced viewpoint from the heart, reminding us that it is God who is building his church, and putting into a Biblical perspective our roles as leaders and followers.

Best book on the topic

As someone involved with church leadership for more than 30 years and having a Doctor of Ministry degree in Church Leadership and Organization, I'm so thankful for the new book, Changing Churches. Dottie Parish has done a remarkable job of filling a void in the church world. So many people struggle with switching churches and often church leaders fail to grasp the depth of that struggle. Dottie's book is the best resource I've ever seen on this topic -- and I highly recommend it for everyone in the church: pastors, staff, elders, teachers, and of course, anyone who is a part of a local church. Her years of experience as a lay leader in the church, her education and professional expertise, and her diligent research -- these all come together beautifully in this helpful book. She covers the biblical principles as well as the practical aspects of our modern church experience where we have so many choices. I have served in a local church with Dottie, and she is the real deal and loves our Savior and His people. Thanks, Dottie!

Long Overdue

"This is a personal, objective, and discreet disclosure of the painful process of changing churches. Through her own experiences, the author advocates responsible behavior in separating from a church. I most appreciated her presentation of the 5-stage leaving process, legitimate reasons to leave a church, and her candid reflection of the struggle she and her husband experienced in these difficult decisions. Her own words say it best, 'Changing churches is like trying to choose a new spouse before the divorce is final.' This is the first book I've read on this topic from the perspective of a church member - and it's long overdue!"
