About the Author
Ralph Warner is widely recognized as a pioneer of the do-it-yourself law movement, Warner founded Nolo with Ed Sherman in 1972. He began publishing do-it-yourself law books written by him and his colleagues after numerous publishers rejected them. Warner holds a law degree from Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley and an undergraduate degree from Princeton.

Very clear and concise, easy to read. Every step from the " I want to buy a home" to the close of escrow, is cogently presented.So if you are thinking about selling or buying a home in the state of California, you should make the investment in owning this book

Finding home

Although I just bought a home in California this past year, I thought it’d be kinda fun to read through this book to reflect on the process (and what a process it was!), and maybe learn a few more details I didn’t know before.
And I was right: this book was actually fun to read. Not only does it give an excellent overview of the entire California home-buying process—including determining the type of home you want to/can afford to buy, finding and funding that home, working with real-estate professionals, determining and negotiating the offer, staying sane through the piles of legalese contracts and clauses, navigating escrow, and sealing the deal—it also includes myriad resources for easily accessing more detailed information on each of the topics. The authors do an impressive job in presenting this information in a highly organized, easily readable, and even at times entertaining way (whoever said home-buying manuals had to be dry?).
Reading this book certainly provided me an extra appreciation for all the details involved in the home-buying process (and relief that I recently made it through all of them untangled!), and it also gave me more insight into the worlds of the sellers, real estate professionals, and others during this process.
I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone on the periphery of home-buying, or anyone who wants a better understanding of the process.
And, maybe next time I jump into a complicated endeavor, I’ll read the how-to book *beforehand*!

**Study this book when you first think about buying a home

This book is helpful to find and make the best use of your resources. I have owned four residences since the 1979s. Each one I either personally bought, or sold, or bought-and-sold -- solely using this book. It gives the California forms and it details the pitfalls. I usually bought an hour or two with a real estate attorney to check my work. When I bought in this fashion, I paid less even though the seller actually pays the Realtor because the seller and I were able to negotiate the price downwards after the Realtor was out of the loop. Now, Realtors will howl and holler about how trying this is scary and foolish. But I KNOW I saved several tens of thousands of dollars over these four homes -- $16,000 on this last home alone. Even if you want to stick with Realtors, this book will help you be a wise and empowered partner with them.
