About the Author
Doskow is a practicing attorney and mediator who has worked with families in the Bay Area for more than 15 years. She specializes in family law, including adoption, parentage issues, domestic partnership formation and dissolution, and divorce. She is a graduate of the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley.
Stewart writes and edits books on landlord-tenant law, real estate, and other consumer issues. She is the co-author of First-Time Landlord, Nolo's Essential Guide to Buying Your First Home, Every Landlord's Legal Guide, Every Tenant's Legal Guide, Leases and Rental Agreements, and Renters' Rights.

A Primer, NOT an Exhaustive Resource

This book could never, let me repeat, NEVER take the place of legal counsel.
THE LEGAL ANSWER BOOK FOR FAMILIES is written in simple english and is well-organized so it's easy to find the information you're looking for. The first half of this book is dedicated to generalized legal overviews of a wide variety of topics from family law to divorce to estate planning. The full second half of the book is dedicated to glossaries, indexes, and state-by-state legal contact references, which might be where the ultimate value of this publication lies. (Speaking candidly, you could probably dig up more of the same information with a few quick internet searches.)
THE LEGAL ANSWER BOOK FOR FAMILIES covers a great deal of ground, but due to the nature of law (and its many nuances and idiosyncracies) this book can only skim the surface of any issue rather than digging deep and providing seriously substantive info. (If you've ever seen a lawyer's office or legal library, you'll have taken note of the volumes and volumes and volumes of printed material on any given subject.) Regarding content, I don't believe I'm being unfair by stating the text for each topic has essentially the depth of a legal pamphlet you might find at an info center rack. Therefore, THE LEGAL ANSWER BOOK FOR FAMILIES can act as a decent primer or starting point in your search for legal information, but you're nearly guaranteed to need additional resources.
My advice would be (and just know, you get what you pay for) that you seek out a book specific to the legal topic you're interested in. It should provide more the substantive knowledge you need.

Great Go-To reference

This is a great reference book to have around in case you need it. I had questions about 4 different things, and it answered all of them. The book is not involved and in-depth, so if you're looking for detailed info this isn't the book for you. But it is a great goto guide for answering basic questions.
I gave this book a 4 instead of a 5, because it did not recommend that in helping you choose an attorney you should check the state's bar association's disciplinary records on the attorneys you are considering. Your state bar association is a great resource, which I did not feel was given enough credit in this book.
Additionally, the bar association in my state has a lawyer referral service. You call them and let them know what your problem/question is, and they will refer you to an attorney. You can have a 1/2 hour consult with the attorney for $25 with no obligation. I used that once, and the attorney sent a letter for me to someone, which cleared up my problem, and he didn't charge anything but the referral fee (which was $15 back then). The attorney can let you know if you have a case, and if it's worth your while to proceed, or advise you on matters. It's a great program, and I'm sure other states probably have similar programs.

Less depth than I expected

While I wasn't expecting an answer-all book covering all sorts of legal problems a family could face, I was rather surprised by the lack of depth in this Nolo-published book. For example, a real problem I have been facing is, can I refuse to let my lunatic inlaws see my kids? And I know of a couple of other families who are facing the same problem, and an Internet search revealed the topic of grandparent visitation rights to be a not uncommon issue for many parents. This book just mentions that 20 states have laws that give parents complete control, but do not list those states. The appendix in the back that lists state-specific laws only covers marriage and divorce (and does so very briefly for each state). I ended up learning no more than what I had already learned from free web resources. (I'm still not clear whether my state is among those granting absolute control to parents or one of the remaining that gives grandparents visitation rights under certain conditions.)
The same kind of lack of depth applies to the other topics, dealing with marriage, divorce, kids, even a bit on real estate planning. In the end, it's not clear to me how this book can help soneone who does need legal answers, even general ones. After all, anyone knows no book can give detailed answers to a family's legal problems, and everyone knows you can get free info on the web. So this book simply does not seem to serve a concrete purpose.
