About the Author
James Mooney has been a faculty member at The Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut, since 1986, serving as physics instructor and science department chairperson. During the summer months he leads workshops on the Physics B and C curricula at the Taft Education Center.

A Very Good Book

I stumbled upon this great little book by purchasing the authors AP Physics C guide and was so impressed by the latter that I looked up other books authored by him. This book does a very good job of teaching the basic calculus needed for the AP Physics C exam. Actually, it does a great job of giving the basic calculus - physics connections for most of what is needed in a first year calculus based physics course. I would even say that it would be a good book to study the essential parts of calculus needed for basic applications. I know that the real AP Calculus teachers would frown on this last bit of advice. But lets face it, most Calculus teachers (1) fail to realize that the power of calculus lies in its physics/engineering applications which is what most students are going into as a major (and not mathematics per se) and, (2) most students don't want to know every last detail proving a particular method - rather, most want to know what is the relevant material so that they can solve the problem - leave the theory to the graduate students please.
The only reason it didn't rank as a five-star book is that it is slightly overpriced for the amount of material covered. But then again, I'm from the old school and never thought I'd see the day that a basic calculus textbook would be gummed up with so many useless graphics and "high technology study aides" that the textbook would cost nearly one hundred dollars as some other more traditional texts tend to cost. In retrospect, this book may deserve four and one-half stars.

Simply the best for my AP Physics "C" class

This is the best review book that I have found for the calculus portion of my physics with calculus class.
Newton invented calculus to solve physics problems. This book sticks to practical applications of problem solving. If students have problems with math in my class, this is the book that I recommend. If you are studying forces, spring, electrical and mechanical oscillation or Gauss' Law, I don't think that you can do better.
I wish that I could afford to buy 45 copies for my class - this book is tops!

The book was overpriced......

This book is basically a rehash of the material in the AP Physics C by the same author. It is not worth the money I paid.
