Practicing family law attorney Doskow (Nolo's Essential Guide to Divorce) has written a thorough overview of the issues surrounding the support and parenting of children when a divorce is contemplated. She covers types of divorces, court processes, physical and legal custody of children, support agreements, avoiding court battles, living with and changing court orders, what to do when one of the parties interferes with custody, and special concerns for military families and same-sex or unmarried couples. Doskow is a practicing attorney and mediator who has worked with families in the Bay Area for more than 15 years. She specializes in family law, including adoption, parentage issues, domestic partnership formation and dissolution, and divorce. She is a graduate of the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley.

Useful but one-eyed

I bought this book as a Kindle download. I found it informative and useful. But it is written from the divorce attorney's perspective and not from that of the client - nor from that of neutral exposition of the law. A good example is the generalized statement that the more you earn the more you pay in terms of child support under the child support formulae of the several States. That is true as far as it goes, but it is a gross oversimplification. I got into the detail on the Oregon and Texas formulae for one child. So far as I can tell (Feb 2012), Oregon has a rate calculated on the addition of the father and mother's income. It goes up to $30,000 per month aggregated income (essentially after tax income) and the obligated support amount goes as low as about 6.7% - at which point the table cuts out. It is a sliding scale. Texas requires 20% of after tax income up to $7,500 per month based on the payer's income after tax. I have not checked whether there are adjustments for the payee's income. It is true that court orders can be made increasing these child support amounts in Oregon and in Texas, when the income exceeds the caps, and it may well be that such court proceedings have a reasonable prospect of success - I do not know - but it should be pointed out in the text that there are often formulaic caps and that once a cap is reached, you are on your own.
In reality, the correct practical advice on the above is that unless you are litigious or there are huge sums at stake, you should take the cap amount. It should also be noted that you can expect your ex to try to cheat on the child support and you need to work out whether it is worth litigating, by a cost benefit analysis.
Whilst useful, the book is written from a typical lawyer's perspective of we are going to fight to the point that the client runs out of money to pay lawyer's fees. There is no dishonesty in this. It is just that lawyers tend to think that legal remedies are worth more than they are - in fact - worth.
In sum, since this is meant to be a practical primer, it fails in lacking practicality. It is not meant to be a rigorous exposition of the law, but if it were meant to be that, it would fail, because the detail is not there. It needs greater practicality, but if it were more rigorous in its treatment of the law, it would need an injection of less practicality.
You may wish to use this book to prepare to go to court - it has some good tips. You should not use it to determine whether you ought to go to court.

But this guide was no help at all. I bought it four years after my divorce to see about changing the child support. Since each state has it's own Family Law codes it is not specific enough for my purpose.
