As time passed, thesesettlers worked out satisfactory lives with their Indian neighbors and friendsuntil the Shawnee were forciblyremoved to Kansas in 1832. The author's maternal ancestors emigrated into the same area in the 1840s. Northwest Ohio would soon be populated by small towns and villages andcleared landscapes dotted by tidy farms. Slowly and regrettably, memories ofthe Shawnee and other tribes whohad once inhabited this land faded as all thoughts were focused on the future. Maps and photos and acomprehensive Pedigree Chart, which traces the Kunz/Lauseancestry from its earliest known date in Americain 1640 to the marriage of Viola Lause and FrederickKunz in 1929, accompany the book's narrative.¿The book's index contains 31 surnames related to this bloodline.

About the Author
Born, reared and educated in the Midwest,the author always felt a strong pull to the West and its native peoples.Perhaps this curiosity came from the Indian name given to her by her father orher family's stories about the Indians who had once lived on the land claimedby her ancestors. Whatever the reasons, Winona Garmhausenmoved to the Southwest in 1972 and devoted the next twenty-seven years toworking with and for native American peoples. Her Southwestern Indian friendsnudged her toward seeking out the Native Americans whose memories and artifactsshe had grown up with in the northwest corner of Ohio.¿ During this personal journey, Winonafound her ancestors and the Shawnee Indians who had lived side by side asneighbors and friends.Winona Garmhausenholds a Ph.D. in American Studies from The University of New Mexico.

Coming Together A Portrait of a Family
Viola Kunz (age 17) and William Fredrick Kunz are pictured on the cover.
This book is a jewel and makes a wonderful gift. The afternoon slipped away as I was caught up in the story of the Kunz/Lause family as they settled in Northwest Ohio near the Delphos - Fort Jennings area. Their lives consisted of hard work and simple pleasures. I treasured Grandma Kunz's stories most.
