About the Author
Joseph Matthews has been an attorney since 1971, and from 1975 to 1977 taught at the law school of the University of California, Berkeley. He has for many years been involved in matters relating to seniors, and is the author of Social Security, Medicare & Government Pensions and Long Term Care: How to Plan & Play for It, as well as How to Win Your Personal Injury Claim.

Useful guide to understanding the basics

I got this book to learn more about how I can help my parents understand their benefits, rights, coverages, options, etc., and it has been somewhat useful to me in doing that because it covers the basics (and then some) but I found the content a little sparse at times and the organization of it could have been better. For my preferences, I'd also have liked if it was "dumbed down" a little more, especially the early chapters on the basics. But it does cover a wide range of information and is a good reference on the topic.

Who should use this book/Who could benefit: Anyone considering applying for Social Security and/or Medicare now or in the next year or two.
Why? Unless you've known someone (in the same state as you) on social security and are intimately aware of how it works (and what doesn't work), you need a lot more information to make informed decisions about when and how to apply ---and the pitfalls to avoid.
I can't vouch for how up-to-date this is (given the new rulings that impact when one or more of a married couple apply and how it affects total amounts you can receive, which is changing or will change soon) in terms of the "latest" rulings for Social Security. And although it talks about Medicare in general, and brings up a lot of the not-so-obvious issues related to ensuring you do get the coverage you need, you have to remember that Medicare is regulated by individual states and things can change in terms of various details that could affect your coverage.
What to Expect: A solid primer on how Social Security and Medicare work, in general, with explanations of the key elements of each and some advice on how to go about selecting Medicare Plans.
You may think you know how it all works. I assure you, you don't. I oversaw my mother's SS and Medicare coverage (She lived in Florida. I live in New York.) and I thought I understood how it worked. Imagine my surprise when it was time for me to apply. I learned the hard way about what was and wasn't covered, especially if you're still working (full or part-time) when you apply for either SS or Medicare.
It's well worth the time you spend reading, carefully, because pretty much everyone will think they know how it works, and find out, too late, that there were lots of little details that negatively affected their choice or claim.
I recommended this to a friend who was approaching retirement but would still be working part-time. He found it very helpful because what he'd been told (by SS employees) seemed to be in error.
This is a great primer, BUT...you must not read it as if it is the final word on any topic. As always, you will need to check at the time you apply to see what may have changed.
It will help you formulate the questions you need to ask yourself, and others, to determine how to get the coverage you need. It may not address every permutation of what someone needs, but it is a good starting point.
There's a lot of stuff out there on the Internet, but I've found that Nolo, as a publisher of these types of books, is consistently more accurate and thorough.

This is great.

This was just what I was looking for. It saved me a bundle. I read in the newspapers about these new changes this year to Social Security rules, and I thought they might be changing what I could claim for me and my wife. I couldn't figure out exactly what the papers were reporting, and Social Security's own website was like a puzzle. But this book had the new rules explained in a really straightforward way, easy to understand, and I was able to use it to figure out making my claim for benefits. I think this book will have saved me a whole lot of money in the benefits we wind up getting. It also has a lot about Medicare managed care plans, which I'm thinking of switching to. So, I'm going to dig into all that, too.
